I am going through my e-mail and wonder if I ever answered one about the picture of the Wagner Place. I wonder if this place is east of the Mills School and on the south side of the road. Mrs John Keller and Mrs Freehling were sisters. Wagners.
I am thinking now that it must have been the original Wagner place.
My daddy went to school with Pauline Wagner and it must have been while they (Crabtrees) were living down on the Hackberry. I guess they must have finished someone elses' time for a homestead. He liked to tell about little Pauline Wagner beating him at ciphering. She must have been pretty good because he was really a whiz. I wonder where the school house was then. Those kind of records must be somewhere in the courthouse.
I remember that the year 1938 or 39 the school had a picnic there on a kind of creek. We had to go through some gates and on a trail to get there. I rode with Gladys Mills . A hired man named Rich was sick with tonsillitis and Marvin had him drive us over there. They were very busy with spring work. Some of the women got some creek water to put in the drink. Everyone seemed to think that was OK. I guess it must have been. No one got sick anyhow. The families were Mills, George Raile's, John Kellers, Leibrandts, Lawson Cooks.
I am thinking that this was the Wagner place. Mrs John Keller's childhood home. Also Mrs. Freehling and Mrs. Kamla.

Alice,
ReplyDeleteThe Wagner Place was located a short distance east of where Merle Mill's house is presently located.
It was on the north side of the road and there is still cement there that you can see. My father Paul Freehling pointed this out to me years ago. There was a Wagner son named Carl who died in World War One.
Calvin Freehling
Calvin,
ReplyDeleteYes, Now I think that I know where the old place was. Ruben and Bernice Bandel lived there in the 1940's. The place that Merle Mills lives and built a new house? Was it the Wagner place before Ruben and Otto Bandel's parents had it?
There is another Wagner place that I remember in the 1930's located somewhat south of there. The road to it then turned west from the N-S road past John Keller's place. It was owned by my friend,Lila Wagner.
Her father had been killed in some kind of accident when she was little. Later when her mother married Jake Peters she gave the farm to Lila. She had it rented to
Gus Leibrandt's at one time that I remember.
I forget now what made me wonder if that picnic spot (east of the Mills schoolhouse) was the Wagner place.
Now I am wondering where the old schoolhouse was located. I know that my dad, Frank Crabtree , went to school there. With Pauline Wagner.
