Adams Family

Last night you mentioned you thought my dad worked for the county or state, actually Emmons Adams ran the Standard Oil Agency in Benkelman and Haigler. Upon retirement, Lester, the oldest child of Emmons, ran the Haigler Standard Oil, adding the propane delivery service to the business.

The first Haigler school was located Southwest of town and burned down. Arson was suspected. Then the school was built in the existing location.

Joann Webster and Lester Adams have an abundance of history about Dundy County.

  1. Dallas,
Where was the Standard Oil building in Haigler? I can remember “The Bay Station”, Texaco (run by Jim Dexter), Conoco (Buck Ryan) and Phillips 66 (Wally McKay), but can’t remember the Standard Oil one. Was it on the west end of town?

I am enjoying the things people are sending in as much as the readers are! I hope Joann and Lester will share some of their knowledge with us.

    Thanks again,
    Sherri

  2. The Standard Oil Bulk Station was west of the stockyards, next to the railroad tracks to offload the tanker cars. There were four huge above the ground tanks for storage. Lester had his bulk propane storage tank east of Haigler, probably about a mile.
