Chicken Story

Remember the mean rooster that we had on our farm!!!!

He would act like he was chasing us every time we would go out of the yard. He'd follow us to the barn. Whenever we would turn around to chase him away, he would so innocently start pecking on the ground like he was eating something. But as soon as we would turn and take a step forward he would take chase again.

One morning I whirled around, mad as a hornet, and whacked him with my bucket. and he acted "like a chicken with its head cut off". Flopping all over the place. I went on into the barn to milk my cow and dreaded to come out to see the "dead" rooster.

He wasn't dead at all. He forgot all about it, I guess, because he continued his habit as before.

I never overcame my phobia of killing things! I never could kill anything except flies with a swatter. Well I've killed several of those big Arizona cockroaches, but had to get book or something to do it with - and then, most of them get away first.

After a chicken was killed I could scald it and pick off the feathers and do the butchering and cooking. But if no one killed it, we just didn't have chicken for dinner that day. PERIOD !! .
