My mom used to talk about the Flood of 1935, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I really learned what a devestating event it was. She personally knew some of the people who lost their lives in that flood and she tells that the water was lapping at the doorsteps of her own home, even though she was in Denver at the time it occurred. My grandmother was home with 2 little kids - one which was my Aunt Floy Ruggles at age 10 and Lloyd. They lived on Cherry Creek west of St. Francis. Even though they lived 5 or more miles from the river, they were in danger because of how high the creek rose.
Don Smith has supplied some of the Souvenir Flood Editions of The Benkelman Post called "70 years ago: The Flood of 1935 revisited". I have begun scanning them, but it may take me awhile to get them all done. I could type them all, but thought you'd like to read them as is. If you click on the image, you will see an enlarged version of the clipping.
The pages I have are 1, 2, 3, 7 & 8. If anyone has pages 4, 5, 6, I would like to borrow or copy them, if you would be willing to loan them to me.
