Mendenhall News

A note from Gerald V. Mendenhall.  Many people around Haigler will remember this family.

Potatoes showed up with Haigler on the package. Made me think of the place. I lived there from 1930 to 1946. Our Buffalo Creek Fish Hatchery sold in 1949. I've traveled a good deal in the military and oil business. My brother, Maurice, and I visited Haigler back in 1992, the last time. I see some names I remember, Don Smith being one of them. He was about our closest neighbor during the dirty thirties. We went to school together at Dist. 76 and 9, I believe in town. I moved to Yuma in 1946 for my last year of HS. My sister, Phyllis, worked in the Parrish Cafe

I currently live in Midland, TX having been there since 1962. My wife, Ruth, and I have two children, four grandchildren and one great grandson. We're in our 80's and doing pretty well.

Of the Mendenhall families totalling ten, who lived on Buffalo Creek north of Haigler, Glendoris, Darlene and I are the only survivors. Glendoris kept in touch with Laura Pearl (Woods) Wall.   I've wondered about some acquaintances. My father, Vern, was manager of the Farmers Equity Union Elevator from 1938 to 1946 when we moved to Yuma, CO. He and wife, Mayme, moved to Lincoln, NE about 1950. Vern died in 1954. Mayme moved to Hastings where she died in 1979. They are buried in Lincoln, NE. Jack, Vern's brother who moved to Valentine in 1938, is buried in Valentine, his wife, Hazel is buried in Lincoln,NE where Glendoris Mendenhall Chicoine lives. Darlene lives in Montana. My brother, Maurice, is buried in military cemetery in Denver. My sister, Phyllis, is buried in Woodward, OK. Keith, son of Jack and Hazel, is buried in Longmont, CO. My long-time friend was Leon Douglas last known in Ogallala.
