Down Thru The Years by Pat Ketler

Pat Ketler, publisher of The Benkelman Post, spent nearly thirty years compiling information for his historic document of “Down Thru the Years” which was published for the readers of The Benkelman Post in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and 70’s.

This document covered the development of southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas, and eastern Colorado from the very early pioneer days, the people, places, and events, up to the time of Pat’s writings. Each installment was numbered and totaled 1,141 installments. However, there were some duplicate numbers, and the total number of installments actually reached 1,172.

The entire text document, in Microsoft Word format, is now available on a DVD, courtesy of the Dundy County Historical Society and the Benkelman Post newspaper.

The DVD contains each individual text installment. In addition there are 15 volumes, each containing enough installments so that each volume is about 300 pages in length for a person to have printed in booklet form if so desired. About 336 pictures (.jpeg format) from the original newspaper articles are included with the volumes, and all pictures are also in a separate file on the DVD.

As an added very-useful feature, all the text without pictures has been combined into one long separate document of a little over 3,900 pages which is a searchable file using Microsoft Word.

For those interested in purchasing a copy of this historical and informative information, each DVD is priced at only $30.00. Checks should be made payable to the Dundy County Historical Society and mailed to either Shirley Mullanix, PO Box 511, Benkelman, NE 69021; phone number 308-423-2682; or to Betty Deyle, PO Box 634, Benkelman, NE 69021; phone number 308-423-2750. Purchasers please be sure to include their complete mailing address and phone number.

Nature’s Gift: THE HIGHWAY 34 SPRINGS

Since times unrecorded, springs from the Ogallala Formation relieved travelers through the Republican Valley.  In 1930 Benkelman citizens improved a nearby spring to benefit motorists on NE 3 (later US 34).  The 1935 Republican River flood destroyed the original spring and highway.  When the highway was relocated, this rest area was established in 1941 at the site of another spring.  The highway was relocated again in 1970 and the state deeded the rest area to Dundy County.  Local residents restored it in 2008.

Next Nebraska Governor from Haigler Area?

Beau McCoy who grew up a few miles west of Haigler is making a run for Governor.  The McCook Gazette had a nice article about him in yesterday's paper.

Good luck to Beau and his family.
