HAIGLER HAPPENINGS - September 19, 2014

The summer has been a busy one in the village of Haigler.  An update on happenings and planned events for fall follows:

     The St. Francis Mercantile Equity Exchange (Haigler branch) has been working for many months on the new Highway 34 frontage for gas pumps.  They are in, lights are on, and ready for your business.  Everything is 'state of the art' and a great business addition for Haigler.

     The Village of Haigler's installation of POU reverse osmosis water systems for all residents and businesses is almost completed.  The well re-linings and the water tower work are completed.  New water main improvements on Porter Avenue are in progress.

     The Cornerstone Museum along Highway 34 is beginning to have a new color and look with the stucco work being done.  Plans are also underway for The Station work to begin---becoming a possible tourist stop in the future.  Thanks to matching grant monies from the Hansen Foundation for these projects.

     The Cornerstone Center for Community Services (former Haigler Elementary School) is now owned by the Haigler Community Foundation.  Major events have included the grand opening activities May 24; the 4th of July weekend celebration; and the Labor Day weekend homemade icecream social.  The Haigler Improvement Committee hosted the 13th annual summer BlueGrass Festival in August.  Many thanks to all in our communities who have supported these events. 

     Services continue to grow at the Cornerstone Center for the communities in and near Haigler.  Open on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. are the Sunshine Thrift (summer clearance now in progress) and the Haigler Depot Library.  Working with the Dundy County Library in Benkelman; the Haigler branch offers many new DVD's and books--free to check out as well as being a Wi-Fi Hot Spot.   Just opened last week is the new mini-mall in Suite 1 where you can purchase used books for only 50 cents; and visit vendor sites for jams, jellies, baked & canned goodies, Avon, Creations by Sabrina, Classy Collections of dishes, glassware, furniture, and miscellaneous.  Come visit and see the offerings.

     Upcoming events at the Cornerstone Center include a wellness and open recreation program.  Beginning Saturday, October 4,  basketball, volleyball, table tennis, exercise equipment, and indoor walking space are available.  For only $10, you will be able to purchase an activity card that will offer you 20 visits for any of these activities.  Center your activities at the Cornerstone!  

     For the weekend of November 1 and 2, plans are underway for the Center to host a regional Gun Show.  Watch for further announcements.

     Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 11 for the 7th annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival held on the Country Schoolhouse Museum Grounds.  Watch for details in fliers and ads coming out soon.

     Haigler is a partner with our other Dundy County communities in the Southwest NE Tourism Coalition.  With a matching grant from the Nebraska State Tourism Commission; this coalition is working on a tourism marketing plan for our region.  This will include a web site and brochures.

     Small communities can make a difference.  

Haigler Happenings - October 24, 2011

The 4th annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival was a grand day!  The weather cooperated with a picture perfect autumn day.  Haigler Elementary students had decorated many pumpkins for the festival. Garage sales had 6 sites and 10 families participating.  Food, music, enterertainment, tumbleweeds, and tours of the completed Country Schoolhouse Museum and future Haigler Cornerstone Museum were enjoyed by all attending.  The Spook Parade down Porter Avenue had costumed participants of all kinds and ages.   Over 45 businesses and individuals from the tri-state area contributed prizes for the festival events.  Through the generous donations of all who attended, $1,000 was raised for the Cornerstone Museum.  Many thanks to everyone who participated.  This year's Maypole Award was presented to Shaw Construction (Jerry & Ben Shaw) of Benkelman.

 

The five children of Marvin and Harriet Carlock enjoyed being together again for the Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival weekend.  The three Carlock sisters--Cheryl Raile of Burwell, NE; Sandy Magley of Bird City, KS; and Linda Miller of Arnett, OK; were guests of their brother Stan Carlock and wife LaNeta at the Haigler White House.  Their brother Marv and wife MaryAnn of Laird, CO brought pizza and birthday cake to celebrate Cheryl's birthday on Friday evening. Everyone pitched in Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to help with the Tumbleweed Festival; and Sunday morning all enjoyed breakfast at the Haigler Country Cafe.

 

The Haigler United Methodist church is hosting a board game night Sunday evening, October 30 at 5:00 P.M.  Bring your favorite board game and yourself - or just yourself - and join in the fun.  The members of the community are invited.  Finger food will be served.

 

Dale and Dode Faylor's daughters, Sherrie, from Burlington and Daneen, from LeCompton, KS, came Thursday evening. They helped Dale finish roofing the house on Friday and Saturday. Sherrie went home Saturday evening.  Daneen stayed and went to church with her parents Sunday morning, had dinner with them in Wray, CO; then went to Burlington, CO, to visit her sisters, Yvonne and Sherri.  She returned home to LeCompton on Monday. 

 

Jeannie Zuege visited Sophia Zuege Monday afternoon.  She has been visiting her mother, Laura Pearl Wall.

 

Sophia Zuege, Iona Maupin, and Linda Morris visited the Brown home on Sunday.  Lorene Putnam visited Iona Maupin on Monday. 

 

Garry and Sharon Fisher with Garry's mother, Floy Fisher, joined a church group visiting the nursing home in Yuma on Saturday afternoon.  There was a song service in which residents chose their favorite gospel song for all to sing, an interesting, short inspirational message with a story and a snack of home made cookies enjoyed while personally visiting with the individual residents who attended.  The group devotes a Saturday afternoon each month for this activity.

 

Several former Haigler community residents who have moved away from the area subscribe to the home town weekly newspapers that carry the Haigler News to keep up on happenings in the area.  Participation of a variety of people who are willing to share their news is much appreciated and makes it more interesting to the readers.  You do not need to have done something great to report an item as news.

A  big, beautiful, fat raccoon visited Floy's back yard Monday morning, checking out things under the dining room window.  If he had known he could have found a feast of kitty food up a few steps on the deck.  Obviously he has been finding plenty to eat elsewhere.  It must be the culprit that has been digging up kitchen trash that has been buried in the garden area.

Haigler Happenings - October 17, 2011

The wonderful long fall with its warm, sunny weather was broken Monday morning when it began to rain and the temperatures tumbled.  But the rain will be appreciated, especially because of the fire danger that had prevailed.

Wednesday, the 12^th, Sherri Morabito arrived at the home of her parents, Dode and Dale Faylor.  She came to help her Dad start roofing the Faylor’s house.  She returned home Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday morning Sherri and her sister Yvonne Clemans and family came back to the ranch to help however they could.  Sherri and Royce Clemans helped Dale and Dwight fix fence that was downed due to the fire at the ranch.  They all spent time putting out flames that showed up.

Faylor’s cannot thank all the men enough who worked so hard to get the fire out.  It took hours as the flames would crop up after it was supposed they were contained. 

Faylors greatest concern was that no one got hurt fighting the fire - at night is bad enough but fighting it at night where there are deep canyons made it much more dangerous.  Prayers for everyone’s safety was a top priority.  Many fire trucks from surrounding areas responded to the call from Kay Kamla for help at the Ranch and surrounding areas.

Kim Zuege and Laura Pearl Wall were Friday lunch guests of Sophia Zuege.  After lunch they all went to MerryLu Simmons home for a visit.

Dode Faylor visited Sophia Zuege on Monday.

The phone service was dead at the time the news was ready to send.

Haigler Happenings - October 10, 2011

Myrna Mulligan and LaNeta Carlock recently visited Gary and Lorene Putnam and enjoyed iced tea and red plum dumpling tarts.  The plum dessert was made from their home grown plums. 

Stan and LaNeta Carlock returned home last week from Estes Park, CO where they had spent time at Machins Cottage in the Pines.

On Wednesday, October 5, Nancy Mahon and RN friends, Carolyn Simpson and Ruth Majors from Lincoln, NE toured the Country Schoolhouse 67 South Museum and the proposed Haigler Cornerstone Museum.

TUMBLEWEED FESTIVAL - The 4th annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011.  Watch for the ads in newspapers, fliers, and upcoming stories.  Everyone is invited to come spend the day, enjoy all the fun activities, listen to great music, treat yourself to a hamburger, hot dog, and trimmings--and homemade pie and ice cream.  There are no admission fees.  Free will donations to support the proposed Haigler Cornerstone Museum project will be most appreciated.  Bring your decorated tumbleweeds for some fine prizes.

A community bridal shower for Becky Leinen will be held Saturday evening, October, 22, 2011 at 7 pm MDT in the Haigler United Methodist Church. 

Richard and Sharna Richardson stopped by Floy Fisher’s home Sunday afternoon on their way back from Hill City, Kansas where they had spent a few days at a “shoot” event, which Richard is a member of.  They had charge of some of the events this time including serving meals.

Haigler Happenings - October 3, 2011

The mailbox for news items at 338 Washington Avenue is up again only moved south a little way – across the driveway.

Monday afternoon, September 26, Kaye Robinson and her daughter, Sandy, from Minnesota visited with Dode Faylor.  They were here to help celebrate Ed Robinson’s 91^st birthday.  Kaye is Ed’s sister-in-law.  Quite a few of Ed’s family were here for the occasion.

Thursday afternoon, September 28, Ellen and Anneke Smits from Holland, arrived at the home of Dale and Dode Faylor.   The ladies are both retired teachers of 40 years each.  Ellen spent part of a school year with the Faylors when Faylors lived in California. Early Sunday morning, the ladies started on their trip back home.  They will go to Vancouver, Canada, where they will turn in the camper they drove to the Faylors. Then they go by plane back to their homes in Holland (the Netherlands.)

On Friday, September 30, Sherri Morabito, Yvonne Clemans and Clemans’ foster son from Burlington, CO, spent the day at the Faylor Ranch, visiting Ellen and Anneke. Ellen and Sherri were in 12^th grade together.  Faylors visited with the ladies some, also. Dwight Faylor was 12 years old when Ellen lived with them.

Sophia Zuege and Laura Pearl Wall had lunch together on Thursday.

Laura Pearl Wall went to the Simmons’ home for lunch on Sunday.  The occasion was Tanya’s birthday.

Haigler Happenings - September 26, 2011

Sophia Zuege accompanied Jinny Zuege to Bennett, CO to visit Jinny's mother and Sophia's sister, Irene Blacker at Bennett, CO over the weekend.

Quentin, Tanya and Taya came onf Thursday Evenning to Laura Pearl Wall's home, bringing Pizza to help celebrate MerryLu's birthday.  Bob and MerryLu were also guests besides Quentin's family. 

Lois Zuege rode with her sisters Edith and Evelyn to Kearney, NE last Wednesday for a medical check up of one of them.  On Sunday Lois met her son, Jeremy, in Fort Morgan.  They purchased some food and went to the park for an enjoyable picnic lunch together.

Lillian Kruse of Lincoln, NE this corresponds by mail with Floy Fisher.  They are the same age with birthdays about a month apart.  Lillian was a Zuege and grew up in the Haigler area.  She has been gone long enough that few if any relatives remain that remember or even know her.   She sent flowers a few months back to be placed on a few graves.  She has been living in her own home but she and her daughter may be moving into a nice 2 bedroom apartment if her home sells.   

Sharna Richardson came to take her mother to the Wray Hospital on Sunday for a blood transfusion and spent the day there with her.  A health fair blood draw had showed a low hemoglobin reading.   Then a recent thyroid blood draw showed the hemoglobin even lower.  The process took over 5 hours. It raised the count from under 7 to 10.   Garry and Sharon Fisher came in for a few minutes visit during the afternoon.

Calvin Freehling says he is moving to McCook in about a month.  He is having a farm sale auction in October.  You can see the details on the internet at http://www.youngsauction.com 

Haigler Happenings - August 29, 2011

Dale and Dode Faylor's daughter, Sherri Morabito, came last Wednesday evening and went home Saturday morning.  She helped pick the rest of the fruit from the Faylor orchard as well as helping with other things during that time.

Dean and Phyllis Clark are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on September 2.  A come-and-go reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, at the Haigler United Methodist Church.

Albert, Jr. and Ginny visited Sophia Zuege last Saturday afternoon and Laura Pearl Wall visited Sophia on Sunday afternoon.

This is a wonderful story, shared by LaNeta Carlock!  Diana Ham, formerly of Benkelman and now of Wauneta wrote a letter to LaNeta Carlock in late July.  She and her family were vacationing in Colorado, close to Granby, CO.  They stopped in a small antique shop in Kremmling, CO - and what she saw in the shop was amazing.  There was a very old Red Wing bowl with the inscription inside "Robert Orr, General Merchandise, Haigler, NE."  Naturally she thought of the Haigler Cornerstone Museum and preserving historical artifacts-so she contacted the Carlocks in Haigler.  LaNeta then contacted the antique store owner.  Long story, short--the antique bowl now resides in the Haigler Cornerstone Museum.  Research indicates these bowls were made as store giveaways from 1920-1930.  It is called a panel spongeware bowl, made by Red Wing pottery.  She had purchased it at an estate auction in Colorado Springs, CO.  Amazing, isn't it?   We hope all readers of this story will watch for other Haigler artifacts that belong in the museum for future generations to enjoy.

Roma and Jerry Rehkow from Denver, CO spent Thursday afternoon visiting Haigler, and in the home of Stan and LaNeta Carlock.  Roma's mother was Helen Roach and grandparents were Charles and Lottie Roach--who owned the home that LaNeta & Stan now live in.  It had been 2 years since the Rehkow's last visit to Haigler so they were excited to see the completion of the Country Schoolhouse Museum (where Roma's mother had taught) and also the beginnings of the Haigler Cornerstone Museum.  They plan to gather more things from "the Roach family" to donate to the Haigler museum.

On Sunday, August the 21st, Jerry and Mary Bier from St. Francis, KS, picked up Deloris Zuege and they traveled to Loveland, CO to attend a Bier reunion picnic in the Loveland park.  They returned home in the afternoon.  The picnic tradition began in the 50's and has continued every third Sunday in August ever since.

Garry and Sharon Fisher came to Haigler last Thursday morning, the 22nd,to Floy Fishers' with their John Deere riding mower and other yard tools.  Garry tore out an old fence in the front yard and trimmed some trees while Sharon mowed.  Sharon and Floy made a quick trip to St Francis to do a little shopping.  Garry and Sharon returned home in the afternoon.  The work they did made a big improvement in the appearance of the yard.

On Monday, the 29th, Garry Fisher came down and brought some wonderful melons and other garden produce from his garden as well as some that others had shared with him and Sharon.   

Haigler Happenings - June 27, 2011

Remember The Wade Hoover family who lived in the tall yellow house years ago?  This is Russ Hoover's cute great grandson.

 

MerryLu,  Bob Simmons, Laurie Perila and children, Laura, Madison and Spencer visited Laura Pearl Wall on Sunday afternoon.  They had attended the luncheon for the alumni of Bob's graduating class from Wray High School.

 

The community picnic sponsored by the United Methodist church was well attended on Sunday evening at the Haigler Park.  The young adults grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks for the "multitude".

 

Former Haigler area resident, Don Smith, fell last Tuesday and had surgery at 1:00. He fractured his right hip. He can not put any weight on it for 6 weeks.  The plan was to move him to Hillcrest (in Wray) on Monday, the 27th,  and with rehab get him to where he can get out of the bed and into a wheelchair without assistance.  Then his daughter, Pat, hopes he can return to Willow Ridge in McCook where his home has been since they moved from the Haigler area.  Perhaps there are some who know him that will pay him a visit.  He had recently moved from his own home in McCook to the Willow Ridge nursing home facility. 

 

Another item borrowed from Sherri Gregory's Haigler Blogspot: Paul Freehling will be operated on July 7th at Bryan Heart Hospital in Lincoln.

The new feline residents at the Floy Fisher home discover may new things every day.  The trees in the yard are for climbing.  Spools will roll if given a nudge with the nose or paw. Throw rugs can be rearranged.   It is their job to entertain their owner as well as to cure loneliness.

Haigler Happenings - June 20, 2011

On Saturday, June 18, a Stute reunion of 30+ people gathered in Haigler.  They were all descendants of Fred and Grace (Sampson) Stute who farmed in the Haigler community many years ago.  Their daughters, Elaine, Carol, Judy, Cathy, and the youngest sister and their families returned to their roots in Haigler.  They visited their former farm north and east of Haigler, enjoyed lunch at the Haigler Country Cafe, and walked the streets of Haigler.  That afternoon, Stan and LaNeta Carlock hosted their visit to the Country Schoolhouse Museum 67 South and they also saw the beginnings of what will be the Haigler Cornerstone Museum.  The busload of Stutes returned to Atwood, KS that evening where they were lodging.  Everyone enjoyed their visit to Haigler.

Early Saturday morning, the 18^th, Dale and Dode Faylor drove to the home of their daughters, Yvonne Clemans and Sherri Morabito in Burlington.  Dwight Faylor arrived at the Clemans later that morning.  Dale and Dwight helped Royce and Yvonne Clemans with a foundation for a new deck at the back of the Clemans home.  Due to rain and a rented machine that refused to run they were not able to get much done and Dwight returned home Saturday evening.  Sunday, Father’s Day, Dale was treated to a dinner with those attending being the Royce Clemans family and Sherri Morabito, Lance Clemans’ wife and 3 sons, and a family friend, Carolyn Hudon.  Lance Clemans was away on a job and wasn’t able to attend.  Dale and Dode returned home on Monday.

Family members who visited Laura Pearl Wall last week included Bob and MerryLu Simmons, Duane and LuAnn Wall of Cheyenne, Gracie and Sydney Wall of Clemmons, North Carolina, Heather, Logan and Noel Klein of Yuma, and Dwight Wall of Lewellen.

Laura Pearl Wall accompanied Bob, MerryLu, Quentin and Taya Simmons to Lewellen to help Dwight Wall celebrate his birthday on Tuesday of Last week.

Garry and Sharon Fisher came down from Wray with Garry’s riding mower.  Garry mowed all of his mother’s 4 lots while Sharon and Floy drove to St. Francis to do a little shopping.

The flooding that is causing big problems in some areas of Kansas and Nebraska as well as other places makes us thankful that we are ‘high and dry.’  However, according to history it can and has happened here.  Some of the older residents can remember stories of their own.  Floy Crabtree-Fisher can remember Cherry Creek west of St. Francis coming up within a few feet of the front door in the 1930’s.  The only way to get to town for groceries was to walk across the Republican River on a floating footbridge.  Thankfully we could drive to the river’s edge by taking a back way trail. 

Due to a problem with the main computer, the news this week is written on another computer, which proves to be at a disadvantage.

Haigler Happenings - June 8, 2011

Brent Wheaton came home Friday for the Memorial Day weekend. He was here to help with the McVey branding on Saturday. Adam and Stephanie Wheaton came Saturday afternoon and brought the new puppy to visit. The weekend was spent outdoors. The garden has some plants in it now. The guys went out to do a little trap shooting. The puppy was walked over several parts of Haigler. 

Haigler’s Alumni/Memorial weekend saw many people “return home.” The class of 1961 held its 50th year reunion with activities at the Haigler Community Legion Bldg., The Lodge, and Sage Hill Winery. Those able to attend the celebration were: Joan Phipps Luebbe of Seward, NE and her husband Roger; Freda Sass Hosic of Stockville, NE and her husband Darryl; Joan Kay Smith of Great Bend, KS and her husband Gail; and Joanie Wheaton Henderson of Haigler. Those class members unable to attend were: Dwight Beeson of Fredericksburg, VA; Carol Wall Flaming of Yuma, CO; Evelyn Williams Brozynski of Norfolk, NE; Cheryl Carlock Raile of Burwell, NE; Betsy Van Horn of CO; and Betty Schwartz from the west coast. 

Other Haigler Alumni Class Recognitions included the 55th thru 75th years. Special recognition was given to the eldest alumni attendees: Don Harford of Haigler for his 76th year; DeVeta Collicott Redfield of Palisade, NE and Royal Woods III of Wray, CO for their 72nd year. The Haigler Alumni Association also presented recognition awards to Laura Pearl Wall (class of 1940) and Joann Webster (class of 1949) for a lifetime of serving the Haigler community and preserving the history and heritage of Haigler. 

Over 150 people attended the Haigler Alumni pot luck luncheon at the Haigler Legion Community Bldg. on the Sunday of Memorial weekend. Everyone enjoyed all the special food treats, visiting and renewing friendships, and program hosted by the 50th year class of 1961. Remembrance of those Haigler alumni and Haiglerites who died this past year included: Dusty Wall, Lester Adams, Stanley Zuege, Grace Bannister, LeRoy Rathburn, Lucille Phifer Corder, and Velda Clark Smith. They shall be missed. 

DeVeta Collicott Redfield (Haigler Alumni Class of 1939), of Palisade, NE and her husband Dwaune spent Alumni Sunday in Haigler. They were accompanied by daughters Sharlene of Brighton, CO and Kaylene of Columbus, NE. After decorating Haigler family graves in the Haigler cemetery; they attended the Alumni pot luck luncheon at the Community Bldg., and the open houses at the Country Schoolhouse 67 South Museum and the Haigler Cornerstone Museum. Late afternoon was spent visiting with their nieces Myrna Collicott Mulligan and LaNeta Collicott Carlock. 

Dr. Tim and LaVeta Smith Blecha of Superior, NE visited family and friends over the Haigler Alumni/Memorial Weekend. 

The Collicott Sisters spent this past weekend in Estes Park, CO--recovering from the hectic schedule of alumni weekend. The Big Thompson River is expected to again this year have some flooding from the heavy snow melt in the mountains. Trail Ridge Road is still closed with 12 foot drifts of snow. 

Sophia Zuege visited with her sister, Irene Blacker, in Bennett, Colorado, from Thursday until Saturday.

Lois Zuege spent Thursday through Saturday with her sister, Irene Blacker, in Bennett, CO.

Memorial Day visitors of Lois Zuege were Diane and Larry Sack (who brought her mother, Hazel Chambers), Dorothy and Eileen Walker, Earl, Helen and Wes Unger, Doris Weaver and daughter Erma and husband Frankie. Other visitors were Idell Zuege and daughter Vernette and Bob Gorman, Vernett’s son Jason and wife and two boys. Also Rae White and Chris and Jim and Jerrie Wheaton came for a little while.

Visitors of Floy Fisher this past week have been Dwight and Leah Brewer and Dwight’s brother, Doug and friend. Dwight and Doug worked on Floy’s car air conditioning while the ladies watched and visited. Floy’s daughter, Sharna Richardson drove her to Goodland to bring home 3 nice 8 week old, part Siamese kittens. She took one of them and Floy kept two and has been entertained ever since; Floy’s son and wife, Garry arid Sharon Fisher stopped by on their way to Kansas City/ Shawnee Mission area to visit their son, Jonathan, and wife Wendy, and meet the new grandson, Reed Owen. Reed has a two year old sister, Taylar. They returned to their home near Wray on Monday. 

It is (unofficially) 94 degrees on Monday afternoon at 3:30 in Haigler. Is it going to be a hot summer? 

Haigler Happenings - May 30, 2011

Birthday celebration

 

Karen Harford celebrated her birthday and the following week in Grapevine, Texas with her son Ty Mayo and his wife Laura.  What a treat to spend time with her two granddaughters, reading stories and collecting insects.  She also spent time with cousins, Denzil and Beverly Clegg and their daughter Ann and her family and her sister-in-law, Joan Mayo and her family.  The weather wasn't always the best with hail pounding and tornado sirens going off, but no real serious damage occurred. It was a fun week and it slipped by all too quickly. 

 

The open house at the Cornerstone Museum was well attended and enjoyed Sunday afternoon.  Stan and LaNeta Carlock are to be commended for their dedication to preserving our past history. Their many hours of restoration, record keeping and research over the years are greatly appreciated by the visitors that came for the Alumni and Memorial Day events as well as by the local residents.

 

Memorial Services at the Haigler Cemetery- began at 10:00 sharp Monday morning.  Kenny Potthoff, Adjutant General, of the American Legion, led in the services.  He gave honor to those who lost their lives for our Country's freedom and expressed appreciation to those who keep the cemetery grounds looking beautiful.  Earl Erdman placed a wreath on the grave of the unknown soldier.  4H members, Angela Crouse and Meg Peterson, led in the pledge of allegiance.  Rick Morris, son of a Legionnaire, offered the prayer.  Althea Lebow sang a solo then Pastor Farmer of the Lutheran Church gave the address mentioning that more lives were lost in the Civil war, fighting each other, than in any other war.  Althea Lebow played Taps for the firing squad.  After the services many went to the Legion Hall for Cinnamon Rolls and more visiting with relatives and old friends. 

 

A Visit to Aunt Floy's House - Leah and Dwight Brewer and Sherri Gregory spent an enjoyable time visiting their Aunt Floy Fisher on Sunday afternoon.  They inspected her garden, enjoyed the many different colored irises blooming around her yard, checked out the apricot tree and caught glimpses of several different kinds of birds visiting her bird feeders.  Sherri enjoyed a special foot treatment which nearly put her to sleep.

Floy Fisher went to Wray, CO Monday afternoon to meet her son and wife, Garry and Sharon Fisher who arrived at their summer home late Sunday night.  They had left their home in Newberry Springs, CA at 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning each driving a vehicle.  They plan to make rural Wray their permanent home now since they are both retired.

 

More Memorial Day events will be reported next week.

Haigler Happenings - May 23, 2011

The Haigler Village Wide Garage Sales on Saturday were lots of fun and many people from surrounding communities attended.  Weather was great, and everyone got good buys. 

 

Haigler residents are anticipating many alumni to return to the place of their roots for a reunion and others for the Memorial Services this week-end.  These events also provide an opportunity to meet old friends and former residents of the area that come for the occasions.

 

The American Legion members plan a Memorial Day Service that will start at 10:00 a.m. sharp on the 30th of May at the Haigler Cemetery.

 

HAIGLER ALUMNI/MEMORIAL WEEKEND EVENTS

     Just a reminder of all the events happening in Haigler over this weekend, and that everyone is making plans to attend.  Saturday, May 28, 2-5 p.m. Haigler Alumni & friends open house at Community Legion Bldg., and also 50th class reunion hosting open house at Sage Hill Vineyard, Rock Creed Rd., 2-4 p.m.  Dundy County/Stratton Alumni Banquet in Benkelman at the high school, 4 p.m.  

    Sunday, May 29, is the traditional pot luck luncheon at the Community Legion Building, main street Haigler, and the 50th reunion class hosting the program.  That afternoon from 2-5 p.m. is open house at the Country School House Museum, and the proposed Haigler Cornerstone Museum on Porter Avenue and on Monday, May 30, Memorial Day services will be held at the Haigler Cemetery--followed by coffee and donuts at the Legion Building.  Haigler Alumni and community are invited to all of these events.

 

Dwight Wall visited his mother on Saturday.  She accompanied him to his home at Lewellen and spent the night there.  On Sunday morning they drove to Eustis, NE to attend the third birthday party of Olivia wall, daughter of Caleb and Sherrill Wall.  Her aunts, Azure and Jessica of Lincoln and Lyndsay Lashley of Palisade and her other great grandmother, Karen VanKooten, also grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ison and some neighbors were among the guests.  Dwight brought Laura Pearl to her home on Sunday Evening.

 

HAIGLER RED HATTERS TEA PARTY

     The Haigler Red Hatters celebrated May birthdays and their May meeting with a Mother Goose Red Hatters' Garden Tea Party on Thursday afternoon, May 19.  Hostesses  were the Collicott  Sisters:  LaNeta Carlock, Myrna Mulligan, and Galena Webster.  Weather cooperated with sunshine, no rain, not much wind, and warmer temperatures.  The Carlock gardens and serving tables were decorated with Mother Goose characters.  Refreshments were served "under the tent," and included Goosey Gander sugar cookies, Peter Rabbit carrot cupcakes, ants on a log; Humpty Dumnpty egg sandwiches, Twinkle Star cucumber sandwiches, Miss Muffet cherry scones, Hey Diddle fruit kabobs, Mulberry bush tea, and London Bridge lemonade.  Activities included searching gardens for the golden egg from Mother Goose, selected readings by Stan Carlock from his recently published book, "Where We Belong," and everyone sharing their favorite nursery rhyme and doll or stuffed animal.  The ladies who attended were Iona Maupin, Joann Webster, Jean Blecha, Esther Erdman, Eilene Erdman, Carolyn Rosenfelt, Kaye Kamla, Jean Moore, Belva Olson, Lois   Zuege, Marilyn Bannister, Doris Tecker, and Veda Douglass--plus the hostesses.  Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

 

Floy Fisher is looking forward to this weekend when her son and wife, Garry and Sharon Fisher, plan to arrive at their property near Wray Colorado.  They have listed their California property in rural Newberry Springs on the Internet and plan to build a new home on their Wray property.  Sharon will have retired this year from her position in Education.  Garry retired 2 years ago and has been concentrating on finishing touches to their lovely home which they built there.  They have it listed on the internet, hoping to sell it soon.  Garry has built a solar system that gives them free heat and pumps their water from the well.   Meanwhile, at Wray, they will be living in their travel trailer beside a  steel building that was erected a few years ago.

Haigler Happenings - May 16, 2011

Friday, May 13th, Myrna Mulligan celebrated her special 62nd birthday.  Cards and telephone calls began her day.  That afternoon she and her sister Galena Webster were guests of her other sister, LaNeta Carlock and husband Stan.  A short story about "our piano lady" was presented and read to her.  The group enjoyed a glass of wine and chocolate, and playing the piano.  Myrna received a special delivery letter from her husband Charlie later that afternoon--who also treated her to dinner at the Haigler Country Cafe that evening.  She had a wonderful birthday.

 

Duane and LuAnn Wall of Cheyenne visited Laura Pearl Wall on Sunday.  They attended church in Haigler and enjoyed visiting with many old friends.

 

MerryLu Simmons came on Sunday afternoon to help her mother with yard work. 

 

Laura Pearl Wall visited Dode and Dale Faylor on Friday.  They cut a lot of rhubarb.

 

Robert and Wanda Beck from Florida were in Yuma, CO on Saturday.  Many years ago (like 40 some) they lived in Benkelman, NE and pastored the Benkelman and Haigler SDA churches.  They have many friends in the area who were happy to have a few hours to visit with them.  Bob has a brother and a 102 year old aunt living in Brush that they try to visit every year.

Haigler Happenings - May 9, 2011

Adam and Brent Wheaton were in Haigler for the Mother's Day weekend.  They brought Adam's new puppy to 'meet the folks'.  Stephanie was attending graduation for her best friend and maid of honor at their wedding.  She called to wish us Happy Mother's Day.  Sunday Jerrie's mother Clara Johnston came for dinner.  The day was spent playing card games, playing with the puppy, and visiting.

 

Lois Zuege spent Easter Sunday with Dianne and Larry Sack and family in Hudson, CO, and also a visited few days with her grandson, Jeremy, before coming home to Haigler.  Then, on Saturday night, Lois and met Evelyn in Wray for supper and were joined by Tom and Charlotte Myer and their daughter Starla and husband, also Shannon and Chris Stults and their 2 little girls.  On Tuesday, Evelyn and Lois, went to Yuma to the home of another sister, Manona, where they joined by Charlotte and Starla and spent the day visiting and copying photographs.  Evelyn and Lois returned to Haigler and on Thursday Lois's grandson Josh Zuege came for a short visit, on his way to Tennessee.  Josh had previously spent a few days with Jeremy in Firestone.

 

Mother's Day guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Simmons were Laurie and Randy Perila and family, Quentin Simmons family, Pat Gallegos, Dwight Wall and Laura Pearl Wall.  It was a warm day so the children enjoyed playing in the lawn sprinkler.

 

Alfred Lee Zuege of Hot Springs, DS, came to spend Mother's Day weekend with Sophia Zuege and Laura Pearl Wall.  Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zuege and Alfred Lee Zuege were Mother's Day guests of Sophia Zuege.

Celebrate Birthdays

 

Birthdays should always be special days for everyone; but it seems the Collicott Sisters always think they should be extra-ordinarily special!  Sisters LaNeta Carlock and Myrna Collicott have May birthdays 6 days apart; and though 6 years difference in age; they have celebrated their birthdays together for many years.  Since their Mother Opal is no longer living to host their party; their younger sister Galena Webster becomes Mama II and hosts their special celebration.  Sunday afternoon, Mother's Day, the family enjoyed chocolate and angel food birthday cakes, homemade ice-cream, and fresh strawberries.  Gifts included flowers to plant, chocolates, and special T shirts.  In fact, you will probably see all 3 sisters wearing T shirts that say, "What happens with the sisters stays with the sisters!"  Later that afternoon the sisters went to Myrna's home for more gifts, piano playing, pictures, and cold lemonade.  It was a delightful day!

Haigler Happenings - May 2, 2011

The Collicott sisters, LaNeta, Myrna, and Galena, returned home late Friday evening.  They had spent several days in Estes Park, Colorado closing up the winter cabin.  There was still lots of snow in the mountains, and it snowed big, fluffy flakes on Friday before their return home. They were also entertained by guests at the cabin on Thursday - elk at their back door!

On Wednesday the 27th of April, three of the Faylor girls, Sherri Morabito, Yvonne Clemans and Daneen Hilger drove to Estes Park, the occasion being to celebrate Yvonne's birthday early.  On Friday they returned - Yvonne dropping Sherri and Daneen off in Wray where Daneen had left her car.  Yvonne went on to her home in Burlington, CO.  Sherri and Daneen went to the home of their parents, Dale and Dode Faylor at the Faylor Ranch.

On Saturday morning Yvonne and her foster son drove to Faylor ranch.  Dode's four girls took her to Wray for a belated birthday dinner and some shopping.  Sherri, Yvonne and Anthony returned to their home in Burlington.  Kim, Daneen and Dode drove back to the Faylor Ranch.  Daneen returned to her home near LeCompton, KS on Monday.  Dode said, "Receiving so much love and attention made turning a year older hurt not one bit".

Carol Flaming had surgery in Greeley on April 27, 2011.  She was dismissed and was able to return the her home on May 1, to help her grandson celebrate his 11th birthday.

Logan Brent Klein celebrated his 11th birthday on May 1, at the home of his grandparents, Jay and Carol Flaming in Yuma.  His parents, Greg and Heather, brother Noel and great grandmother Laura Pearl Wall attended the family dinner hosted by Carol and Jay.

Several of Violet Relph's family met in her home to honor her birthday last Sunday.  They enjoyed a good dinner together and then some of the group worked on the lawn and in the yard planting flowers, etc.  Lavern was in the hospital so could not be with them at the time but was able to go home on Monday, after being in the hospital about eight days.

Spring seems to have been slow getting here but blossoms, flowers and tree leaves are popping open at last and warmer weather is promised for the latter part of the week and week-end.

Haigler Happenings - April 25, 2011

The Haigler Community extends sympathy to the family of Velda Clark Smith.  Velda was a Haigler High School graduate and lived most of her life in the Haigler community until her move to Goodland, Kansas a few years ago.

Stan and LaNeta Carlock returned home Friday evening from Greeley and Estes Park, CO.

On Easter Sunday afternoon, Myrna Mulligan and Galena Webster were guests of Stan and LaNeta Carlock.  They were all celebrating Stan's just published book of short stories, "Where We Belong."

 BIRTHDAYS

    Dode and Dale Faylor drove to Burlington, CO, Friday the 22nd to the home of their daughters, Yvonne Clemans and family and Sherri Morabito.  They celebrated Dode's birthday the 23rd.  Faylors returned home that afternoon.  Dode received phone calls from family and friends which made it a very memorable day.

On Monday afternoon, Dode Faylor received a phone call from Ellen Smits.  The Faylors call her their Dutch daughter.  Ellen spent part of a school year living with them as an exchange student when the Faylors lived in California.  Ellen and the Faylor's daughter, Sherri, were in the 12th grade and graduated together.  Ellen and her twin sister have taught in the schools in Holland for many years.  They plan to visit the Faylors again this year in September.

EASTER EVENTS

Relatives who visited in the home of Laura Pearl Wall on Saturday were Dwight Wall of Lewellen, Azure of Lincoln, Lindsay and Claire Lashley of Palisade, Randy, Laurie, Spencer, Madison and Laura Perila of Westminster, Quentin, Tonya and Taya Simmons, Bob and MerryLu Simmons.  It was a cool cloudy day so the Easter egg hunt was held in the house, but everyone enjoyed the festivities.  Sandwiches, cookies and punch were served.

On Sunday, Caleb and Sherrill Wall of Eusitis entertained Dwight Wall of Lewellen, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Eyesome of Mullen, NE, and Laura Pearl Wall on Easter Sunday.  Allison, Olivia and Whitney entertained their grandparents, Dwight Wall and Joe and Deann Eyesome by counting their buckets of Easter eggs after the Easter egg hunt.  Laura Pearl is great-grandmother of Whitney, Allison and Olivia.

MerryLu Simmons visited Laura Pearl Wall on Wednesday afternoon.

On Friday morning, the 22nd, Mel and Norma Fisher, Floy Fisher and Sharna Richardson drove to Denver so Mel could pick up his truck which had been in the shop for repairs.  They all enjoyed some shopping and a meal at a Country Buffet before Sharna and Floy returned home so Sharna could get to work at 4:00 in the afternoon.   Mel came later in the evening. His truck was not finished until later in the afternoon. 

On Sunday, Floy rode with Richard and Sharna Richardson to visit Richard's mother and grandmother in the Loveland/Fort Collins area then to Ault to visit Sharna's daughter, Sonja Howes and family where they enjoyed dinner with Mike, Sonja and son Austin at Mike's parents home next door along with several other their relatives.  They returned home in the afternoon.

Haigler Happenings - April 18, 2011

Calvin Freehling reports “Heart cath last Wednesday, 40% blockage. Hernia operation yesterday in Lincoln, man am I sore.”

Laura Pearl Wall celebrated her 88^th birthday all week.  MerryLu Simmons had planned a nice party at her house. Sophia Zuege and Dode Faylor were invited but the snowstorm made a change in plans.  Those who came during the week were Quentin, Tonya and Taya Simmons, Jeannie Zuege, Dwight Wall and Laura Pearl Wall.

Jeannie Zuege of Hot Springs South Dakota came on Tuesday.  She visited Sophia Zuege, Laura Pearl Wall and the Robert Simmons’.  The spring storm changed plans but the moisture was appreciated.

Among the Red Hat Ladies, Eileen and Esther Erdman, Ione Samler, Doris Tecker, Joann Webster, Deloris Zuege, Jean Moore, Nancy Freehling, Lois Zuege, and Veda Douglass went to Yuma to the Pizza Hut on Wednesday last week.

Sophia Zuege, Laura Pearl Wall Jeannie Zuege and MerryLu Simmons went to Wray and enjoyed Mexican food together one day last week. 

Sharna Richardson visited her mother, Floy Fisher, on Sunday afternoon, April 17.

Floy Fisher, Mel and Norma Fisher drove to Sterling Saturday afternoon to attend the ordination service of Pastor Rene Lopez who pastors 4 Northeast Colorado Churches.

Haigler Happenings - March 28, 2011

On Friday the 25th Daneen and Phil Hilger of LeCompton, KS arrived at the home of Daneen's parents, Dale and Dode Faylor.  They came to get a saddle horse Daneen's brother, Dwight Faylor, had for her.

 

Dwight and Kim joined the family for dinner Saturday.  Ed Robinson visited in the afternoon.

 

Daneen and Phil returned to their home on Monday the 28th.

 

Charlie and Myrna Mulligan were Friday night guests in the home of Steve & Jody Crouse and family.  They were excited to see all the renovations to the farm house.  Charlie had made pizza to celebrate the occasion and Jody and Alicia had made other goodies to complete the dinner.  Alicia was home from college for Spring Break.  Earlier in the week, Jody and Alicia were visitors in the home of Charlie and Myrna.  Alicia had brought music and entertained everyone beautifully on the piano. 

Robert and MerryLu Simmons visited Laura Pearl Wall on Thursday.

 

Sophia Zuege was a dinner guest of Laura Pearl Wall on Friday.

 

The Spring Snow storm left a covering of snow over the week-end.  Many people celebrated by staying indoors at home, which was the most common news item for most people.  Alice Gregory reports beautiful weather in Tucson, AZ. 

Haigler Happenings - March 21, 2011

Saturday night Jim and Jerrie Wheaton and several other firemen and E.M.T's from Haigler, traveled to Benkelman for dinner.  It was a tribute to the firemen and E.M.T's of Dundy Countyand was sponsored by businesses and individuals in Parks, Benkelman and McCook.  The honorees and spouses were treated to a prime rib dinner and live entertainment.  It was a very pleasant evening.

 

Brent Wheaton was home Monday March 21 for a short stay during his Spring break.  He celebrated his first day home with breakfast at Aunt Barb's. 

 

Stan and LaNeta Carlock were informed last week that they were the recipients of the FENCE POST-Plains Edition Good Neighbor Award.  The FENCE POST is a widely read farm and ranch newspaper in our Nebraska plains region.  The award was given in recognition of the many things the Carlocks have done for the Haigler/Dundy County community, including a challenge grant for new roofing at the Haigler Golden Inn Senior Center, and the Country Schoolhouse Museum Project.  A quote on the certificate they received reads, "I shall not pass this way again.  Any good I can do or any kindness that I can show--Let me not defer or neglect it.  For I shall not pass this way again."  They were nominated by Gerald and Betty Myer of Haigler.

Dwight Wall of Lewellen, NE, came Saturday to visit his mother, Laura Pearl Wall, and other relatives.  MerryLu Simmons came on Sunday to visit Dwight and Laura Pearl.  All attended church in Haigler.  Following the services MerryLu and Dwight spent some time visiting in the Wall home.  Dwight and Laura Pearl enjoyed the pleasant weather by spending some time raking leaves in the yard.

 

A community baby shower for Jenni (Olsen) Evans and new little son, Samuel, will be held Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m. MDT in the Haigler United Methodist Church basement.

 

Last Monday, Lois Zuege and her sister Edith from Benkelman visited Manona Moore and Marvin Van Horn at the nursing home in Yuma.  Other family members, Evelyn Stover and daughter, Linda Scott and granddaughter, Ella Clear, had come there from the front range making it sort of a mini- family reunion.

 

On Sunday, Lois Zuege had lunch with her sister, Edith, at her home near Benkelman.   

 

Last Monday Dode Faylor's sister-in-law, Virginia Rathbun, and grandson, Jay, and a friend, from Denver visited in the Faylor home.  They had come down to make arrangements for Leroy Rathbun's gravestone.

 

Floy Fisher's son and daughter in law, Garry and Sharon Fisher, arrived safely from Hawaii at the Las Vegas airport  on Sunday afternoon having enjoyed a memorable vacation in addition to attending their daughter, Chere's graduation.

 

Haigler Happenings - February 28, 2011

On the 17th of February, Karen Harford left for Benicia, California to make the acquaintance of her six month old granddaughter, Ahnkeetah Jones. She spent six days with her son, Torre and daughter-in-law Seelu.

Kurt Zuege of Colorado Springs, CO, came on Monday of last week.  He visited Robert Simmons as Robert was leaving the Hospital.  Other relatives that were there included MerryLu Simmons, Quentin Simmons family and the Perila family from Westmister.  Kurt then visited his grandmothers, Laura Pearl Wall and Sophia Zuege, at Haigler.

Kurt Zuege was a guest of his grandmothers Laura Pearl Wall and Sophia Zuege on Tuesday then all went to the Robert and MerryLu Simmons’ home.

On Wednesday, Kurt went to Funk, NE, to visit his sister Kimberly and friends.  He returned to Colorado Springs on Friday.

Dwight Wall of Lewellen, NE, visited his mother Laura Pearl Wall on Sunday.

 Late Saturday night, unbeknown to Floy Fisher, her son was involved in an accident at the intersection of Highways 27 and 36 west of St Francis.  Traveling south from Haigler, the fog was so dense he did not realize he was at the dead end until his lights hit the barrier in front of him.  He successfully steered the truck, avoiding the barrier and the trees but did not upset his truck or the loaded trailer.  But it was a rough ride as he was standing hard on the brakes through it all.  He came out with a few bruises, sore spots and a bleeding hit on the head, leaving a knot, spending the rest of the night in the St Francis hospital.  The truck had some damages but was able to be driven to the repair shop.
