Beanie Palmer flew around the area extensively. I think his dad was a former pilot. Don't remember if Beanie's sister flew or not.
Rex Daniels flew back and forth checking properties between Kansas and Nebraska. I think one of Rex's daughers flew the Haigler area.
I think Rex Tracy flew the area from time to time?? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Leslie White flew in the area, also.
Some of these events happened after my leaving the Haigler area.
If I have missed any local pilots, please feel free to write the blog and report them.
As a kid, I remember planes circling Haigler and sometiems the plane would land west of town with an escort waiting.

PS:: Correction Notice: Archie Palmer is who flew the plane, I don't know if Beanie flew or not?? Archie was the father. Memory takes a little jog now and then.
When we were young and dumb, we used to go out to Palmers at night and climb that big transmission tower. Get a few feet off the ground and think we were high in the sky... Dumb, Dumb and Dumber (No names here... - is that a confession???)
DALLAS
Dallas, Yes my Dad had his own plane, altho he didn't fly as much as some of the other guys. Always said he wasn't tired of living, if the wind was blowing too much. My Mother ( Maxine) never did care for the flying as much as the rest of us. Once she did go only because my son, Luke Jay Cochran, Dad and I were all going, she said if we were going to die she wanted to be with us. I done a few lessons with him, but never did go on the take lessons.

Also, didn't the Cleggs have a plane? and the Bush family that lived between Haigler and Parks?
ReplyDeleteAlso, flying ranchers of Dundy Co included Rex and his wife Bev Tracy, Don, Gail and Ray Harford (deceased), Neal Clegg (deceased), and Dean and Paul Erdman. I think Royce Stute flew also, but don't know that for a fact.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your articles on the blog. Just takes a lot of time to read every one :)
Yes, Royce Stute (my dad) had three different planes over the years. He flew them to check cattle and the corn fields.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to some of the references above: "Old Man Palmer" was Archibald Grant Palmer. Three of his children were Archibald ("Archie), Lyle ("Beanie"), and Loretta ("Retta"). Lorretta is in an assisted living community in Benkelman. Beanie was a tank commander in WW2 and made more than one landing on D Day. Archie was the one who flew a plane, taking off from the field just east of the barn. Grandpa ("Old Man Palmer") may have played a few games of cards, but his passion was checkers. He was once simultaneous checker champion in Nebraska and Kansas.
ReplyDeleteStanley Palmer (not the one who died at 4 years of age), child (#2 of 13) of William ("Tabby"), Grandson of Archibald (the one who was married, not the one who never married), great great grandson of Archibald Steele
