Another Alumni Celebration

The Haigler alumni  potluck and gathering today was a huge success for those who were able to attend.  The class of 1961 had a nice visit yesterday at the Sage Hill winery and the dinner on Saturday night in Benkelman was a success.

It is always fun to visit with people you haven't seen for years.  I enjoyed seeing Karen White Lindell, my best and longest standing friend, Karen Harford, who I admire for her ambition, kindness and love of family and home; Albert Zuege, who always makes me smile; Kay Smith Hulse who is enjoying her retirement by traveling the country with her husband in their new 5th wheel; LaVern, Mick, Danny Schorzman; cousins and friends; Ted Harford who loves reading the Haigler Blog; Freda Sass; Almeda (Bier), Russ Hoover, Joan Phipps, Jeanne Wall Zuege, Mary Lou Wall,  LaNeta and Stan Carlock and so many more.

Recognition Awards for historical contributions were given to Laura Pearl Wall and Joann Webster for their long standing preservation, collections and writings of Haigler history.

Next year the class of 1962 will host the event.

There was an open house at the country school house and the Cornerstone Museum located in the old Crabtree building on Porter Avenue.  Plans are being made to donate this building to the town of Haigler and invitations were made for people to donate items depicting the farming and ranching community around the area.  If your family has "artifacts" that you would like to share or if you would like to contribute to the restoration of the building, you can contact LaNeta and Stan Carlock in Haigler, Nebraska.

The family of Ward Wonder donated a very interesting family history shadow box that will be hung on a wall in the museum.  This gave our family an idea of something we can do - we plan to create something for a "Crabtree Corner" in the museum. Royal Woods II donated items such as a corn sheller and a cream separator. The old phone booth from the Central Office is sitting in the center of the room; the safe from the Drover's State Bank; tools from Roach's blacksmith shop; a wood burning kitchen stove from Karen Zuege's home; a horse drawn buggy from the Wall family; single trees; harnesses and a saddle.  So many memories are already waiting for us to enjoy.  I look forward to seeing the interesting historical items that other families share.

While I was at the Cornerstone Museum, I picked up a copy of the new book, "Where We Belong"  by Stan Carlock.  I am looking forward to sitting down to read it.

Everyone loves to talk about their memories of years gone by and I hope YOU will begin writing down things that you remember about growing up in the Haigler Community.  If you have stories you would like to share, feel free to send them to me; I would love to post them here on this blog.

Tomorrow: Memorial Day, the annual service to honor those who have served in the military service of our great country will begin at 10am.

Alumni/Memorial Weekend

This coming weekend, May 23, 24, is Alumni weekend for Stratton and Dundy County schools. Even though Haigler has not had a highschool for over 20 years, the Alumni Association always plans a great openhouse on Saturday and a well attended potluck lunch on Sunday every year.

These events are a great time to stop and visit with old friends even if you didn't finish high school there. Other events throughout the county are also opportunities for a social get together.

Monday is a great time to attend the memorial ceremony at the Haigler cemetery.

Hello from Colorado

Well, it's been a long time since I wrote--we've had a very busy year.
Jeri, my youngest daughter, got married in January to Steve McEwen, who is an engineer with Raytheon in Tucson--Jeri is an RN at Northwest hospital. We are so lucky to have them living just a few blocks away from us, so we get to see them and Kayla almost every day. Kayla is 15 and a sophomore in high-school.

We feel very fortunate now, since I've retired, to be able to spend the entire summer in Colorado at the cabin. This is a view from our back deck after a late snow (on June 14)

In May we went to Haigler for the Memorial Day alumni reunion and got to see several folks that I hadn't seen for probably 50 years--Almeda Bier, Russell Hoover, Albert Zuege, Jr, LaNeta Carlock, and Louise Zuege--among others. I just missed seeing Karen (White) Lindell by a few minutes.

Summer is about over, and it's almost time to head back to Arizona for the winter. There's more excitement in store when we get there. We are getting a new grandbaby in November. I think Kayla is more excited than anyone else about a new little sister!

Also, I think all of my sisters and my brother will be together with our mother for Thanksgiving. This will truly be a time to give thanks!

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE

A good number of people turned out for the Haigler Memorial Day Service in spite of the wind and cool temperature Monday morning at 10:00.

Kenny Potthoff was the master of Ceremonies. Gordon Orth played pleasing background music on the guitar. A Wreath was placed on the tomb of the unknown soldier followed by the pledge of allegiance. Prayer was offered by Mildred Stute. The Address was given by Terry Douglass. Althea (Brunswig) Lebow sang Faith of Our Fathers accompanied by Betty Orth on the guitar. The firing squad consisting of the Legionaires and sons of the Legionaires gave the gun salute.

After the service at the cemetery, refreshments were served at the American Legion Building.

Memorial Day Weekend

I wasn't going to say any thing, but I allready have my airline ticket to Denver, via Alamo car rental to Haigler. I will only be one week from arrival to departure that week-end, if I can afford the gasoline???

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I will have to travel undercover or disguised. I guess I just can't keep a secret.

My friend John will not be there as he will be out on a cruise ship--I really wanted to touch base with him, but I already purchased the ticket, besides I wanted to see family again.

Plan Ahead for Alumni Weekend

It is probably not too early to put a note on calendar about Haigler/Alumni/ Memorial Weekend -- May 24-26 - hoping many alumni will "come back home." The Class of 1958 (Stan's class of 6) will be the honor class of 50 years. We will continue the tradition of Saturday open house at the Legion Community Bldg. 2-5 p.m. and the pot luck on Sunday at 12 noon. -- More as things develop.
