Even though this note is a little late, I just ran across an article in the Waunita Breeze newspaper, which is online. It shows the kind of spring weather western Nebraska enjoys!
Spring storm shuts down power across SW Nebraska
Another article in the Imperial Republican adds more to the story.
Ol' Man Winter just can't let go, can he?

IKE
yIKEs!!! Still haven't heard from my brother, Dick, who lives in Spring, Texas! I bet they had a scary night and morning!Last night, they said they were prepared with plenty of water and food. They expected power outage for several days.
Spring is just north of Houston on Interstate 45.
I've been watching the reports of damage this morning and expect they were in the middle of some pretty damaging winds during the early morning hours until later today. One of the things mentioned was the windows being blown out of the buildings in downtown Houston. The last contract I know of that he worked on was in the Chase building that was mentioned in the damage reports.
I'll keep you updated:
Saturday: Dick & Sharon and their house and survived the heavy winds and rain with very little damage. Their electricity was out for awhile, but is back on. They missed the brunt of the wind. We are thankful for that. Dick's daughter, Sheila & husband Marty have a tree on top of their house, but didn't break through the roof...
Later:
Do any of you have friends or relatives that live in the Galveston or Houston area?

Weather Report from Gene & Vie's House
Just thought I'd let you know about our weather.Sunday night at 12:30 am our weather alert went off and said Sioux City and areas around us are in a bad storm warning.(of course it really started about 10 PM) but at 12 I told Gene that I had better get our flag in the house.it was lightening and thundering and slow rain then but man, I was so lucky as soon as I came in the house it really started. We got about 1 1/2 half inches of rain then and that wind was clocked at 93 mpr at our airport which is about 7 miles from us. Here it was about 79 we were told.
Gene and I were looking out at the trees and man some were almost to the ground....pretty scarry if you ask me. Some trees around Sioux City were twisted and pulled up from the ground. Lots of damage.
The past two days and nights we have had rain and last night the thunder and lightening was pretty bad, BUT no wind with it. We got 2 2/10s inches last night.
Our place is in a valley as there are hills around us. If it rains hard, we have to watch it so we don't get flooded. We have lived here 27 years now and have been lucky so far even though it has been close sometimes.
Well just thought I'd tell you about our weather here. Do hope that you all don't have an experence like this.

Vernon Whetston's Weatherbug Blog
Vernon's Weatherbug Blog is back. I got a note from him yesterday. He says he isn't a "Haiglerite", but don't you think the fact that Janice was a teacher there makes them one? I think A Haiglerite is anyone interested in the town and/or related to someone who has lived or is living there or in the close proximity with a mailing address of "Haigler, Nebraska."
At any rate, the link to the WeatherBug page is back on the Haigler Blog page.
"Just thought you would like to know, I have solved the computer problem I had and am now writing for the Weatherbug Blog again. I know at one time you had a link to the Weatherbug on your page.I enjoy reading the Haigler Blog, even though I an not a Haiglerite ( I am not even a Nebraskan) I feel I have a connection having covered Haigler events for the Benkelman Post and with my wife Janice teaching in the high school there for several years.Keep up the good work."Vernon Whetstone

Remember When
Remember when the "weatherman" was wrong more than he was right? Well technology has certainly improved "his/her" odds. They were very accurate in predicting the ice storm coming through last night. "They" said it would hit Lincoln about 3AM and even though I didn't stay up to see if they hit the "hour mark", they certainly were right about and Ice Storm.
I woke up this morning to see everything covered with a layer of ice. The trees are drooping with it and my fence is thick with it. The buildings are shiny and sparkling with it. Now we will see if the 3-6 inches of snow "they" predicted will fall on top of it.
Needless to say, I am staying home today where it is cosey and safe!!

Newborn Moose in the Yard!
These pictures of a baby moose with its mother on the front lawn of a house was sent by Vicky (Decker) Scott, who lived for a short time on the Mahon place north of Haigler with her parents Bill and Marcia Decker, when she was a child. The person who took the pictures is a friend of hers and writes:

In my 33 years in Alaska , I have never seen a newborn baby moose. This one was not even a half a mile from our house. The mother picked a small quiet neighborhood and had her baby in the front yard at 5:30 am. We were out bike riding when we came upon the pair. The lady across the street from this house told us she saw it being born. We saw them at 5:30 pm . So the little one was 12 hours old. What an awesome place we live in to see such a site.Enjoy!

Vernon's Weatherbug Blog
Dear editor,
How surprised I was when I opened the Haigler Blog link to find that there was a link to the blogs I write for the Weatherbug. I read about the Haigler Blog in the Benkelman Post and thought I would take a look at it.
We moved to Dundy County from Missouri in 1979 and became involved with the county centennial effort shortly thereafter. I remember working with Laura Pearl Wall and others from Haigler as we set out to celebrate the founding of the county. I also have an interest in Haigler because my wife, Janice, taught school there for several years until the school merged with the Benkelman school system to become Dundy County Schools.
I also worked for a time as a news writer for the Benkelman Post and covered many stories from the Haigler area.
The blog looks good, keep up the good work and I will try to include some weather information from the western part of the county now when I write for the Weatherbug.
