Haigler Happenings - August 30, 2010

Charlie and Myrna Mulligan, accompanied by their son, Rich, and granddaughters, Hannah and Lucy, drove to Denver on Tuesday morning, August 10th. That afternoon, Rich and the girls returned to their home in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, by Delta Airlines.  Many events occurred during the visiting time that the South Carolina Mulligans enjoyed with parents, grandparents and other relatives. Some of those events included a cabin stay in Estes Park, Colorado, and exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park; a golf outing; a tour of the Rock Creek Fish Hatchery and a visit to the Sage Hill Winery; a birthday celebration at a party hosted by Stan and LaNeta Carlock, honoring Hannah Reed, the "birthday girl" who turned 11 on August 6th, as well as celebrating the July birthday of Rich and the September birthday of Lucy; a luncheon held at the home of Sophie Zuege; a "tea revisited" at the White House home of Stan and LaNeta Carlock; attending the Haigler Bluegrass Festival; enjoying pizza night at Jake's Place; a visit to the grounds of Paul and Nancy Freehling; and a "game night" at the home of Stan, Galena and Darrell Webster. Charlie and Myrna returned home to Haigler on Tuesday night.

Alicia Crouse was a recent visitor in the home of Charlie and Myrna Mulligan.  Alicia and Myrna enjoyed some piano time before Alicia's departure to attend college in Hastings.

Alfred and Jeannie Zuege were down from Hot Springs, SD to visit family over the week-end.  Alfred stayed with his mother, Sophia.

Floy Fisher and her daughter, Sharna Richardson attended a Food Pharmacy dinner, demonstration and lecture given by a team from Eden Valley Institute, near Loveland, CO, featuring the health benefits of a vegan diet at Goodland, Kansas on Sunday, the 29th.  Floy and Sharna did some shopping afterwards.

The communities of Laird and Wray, CO and Haigler, NE were saddened again by another loss, that of Rusty Heaton of the Laird community.   

  

Some memories of Grace Bannister:

Mrs. Bannister was my third grade teacher. She was a good teacher. - Calvin Freehling

Well, she was one of my teachers, and then knew her while growing up in Haigler.  Not sure I ever heard her say anything bad about anyone.  A true lady.  Saw her frequently here in Wray when they moved her to Hilcrest.  Remembered who I was until about this last year. - Rick Schorzman

She was elementary school teacher for many years in Haigler, and in country schools before that.  Each of the Collicott children had her as a teacher, and I am certain we are better people because of her teaching us in those early years.  Many of her former students still reside the the Haigler and/or SW NE communities.  Brother in law, Marv Carlock, tells the story of his first day of kindergarten with her and when his mother left him, he was sitting on Grace's lap, and kicked her shins so badly that they were bruised.  Sister Myrna tells of Grace always letting her read a book instead of taking a nap in later years, after Stan and I moved back to Haigler, Grace lived in the trailer house over next to where Keatings now live.  The sisters would always take her some of the jams, jellies, and baked goodies we made, and she shared many of her recipes  with us, wanting us to try them, too.  She enjoyed walking by our gardens and stopping to visit early in the mornings.  One time Stan and I were working in the arboreteum, and he had just sat down in a chair.  I was still working,  and she asked who the yard ornament was (meaning Stan.)  From then on, she called him "my yard ornament."   She had a great sense of wit and humor.  When our cat, Mr. Spook, was 5 years old, we had a big birthday party with invitations, etc.etc., and through all of her Hillcrest Nursing Home years she never forgot that - thought it was really something and would always ask about the birthday cat.  One day when she walked by, slower than usual, with a tear in her eye, she told us it was time to go to assisted living at Hillcrest.  Then later years she had to move to skilled care.  She was at Hillcrest when Mother and Daddy were there so we visited her often, too.  She always enjoyed the 3 sisters as clowns, too.  Galena was working the night shift a few days before Grace died, and she tells the story that Grace asked her that night to take her home with her and take her "up the hill."  She was ready.  She died a few days thereafter.  Interesting!   She was a great teacher and individual.  Haigler has once again lost one of its' best!. - LaNeta

Impromptu Runion

The three oldest Gregory sisters plan to meet on Labor Day weekend for an impromptu reunion.  It's hard to tell what will happen while they are together, but you can count on hearing laughter and alot of talking coming from Leah's little house in Sainty.  Hopefully their Aunt Floy will be around for a long overdue visit from the sisters.  Other relatives and friends in the area also might be on the look-out for their approach!!

Grace Bannister

The Haigler community, both local and distant, are saddened to hear of Grace Bannister's death on Monday.

Her funeral will be on Thursday.  Details not known at this time.

Haigler Happenings - August 23, 2010

The BWTelcom crew has been busy laying lines for fiber optics in Haigler in spite of the above 90 degree weather.  The improved internet service will be appreciated.

 

A going away to college party for Alicia Crouse was hosted by Stan and Laneta Carlock last Thursday evening with a cookout, salads and a big cheese cake.  Those attending were Steve and Jody, Alicia, Angela, and Jared Crouse, Marlin Crouse, Merna and Charlie Mulligan.  Alicia is attending Hastings College.

 

School has started at Haigler Elementary school with 15 students, Kindergarten through 6th grade. 

 

Noel Klein of Yuma celebrated his 3rd birthday on Friday, August 20.  His great grandmother, Laura Pearl Wall drove to Yuma to help him celebrate at the home of his grandparents, Carol and Jay Flaming.  Other guests were Jailyn and Laney Mekelburg and brother Logan.  His mother was teaching school but she and Greg joined the group for a delicious lunch.  The Klein boys love cars and trains so the birthday cake was decorated with a huge red car.  Jailyn brought a set of bowling pins and a red ball which furnished a lot of fun along with the train and car put together sets of trains and car tracks.

 

The Haigler community lost one of its oldest and best residents this past week.  Lester Adams died August 19, 2010.  He shall be greatly missed.  Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 a.m. At the Haigler Lutheran Church, with military honors and burial at the Haigler Cemetery.  Deepest sympathies are extended to Lester's family.

 

The Collicott sisters, LaNeta, Myrna, and Galena spent Thursday in McCook.  They enjoyed a Mexican fare lunch, celebrating Galena's August 21  birthday.

 

The Haigler Red Hatters carpooled to Benkelman on Friday for their August outing.  Hostesses Jeannie Blecha and Carolyn Rosenfelt had a delightful luncheon and afternoon planned.  The group met at the Senior Center for a delicious chicken fried steak meal; then toured the Dundy County Museum at the old Morehouse Hospital in Benkelman.  Many of the group were born in that hospital and/or had memories of stays or visits there when the hospital was in operation.  Following the tour, everyone enjoyed having an old-time frosty at the soda fountain.

 

Members of the Haigler United Methodist Women group visited the Hester Nursing Home in Benkelman on Friday afternoon.  President of the group, Karen Harford, led the program with puppet shows and singing.  Fellow member, Sally Daniels also helped with the puppet show.  Myrna Mulligan played the piano; and members Marilyn Bannister and Deb Bush assisted with the singing.  Also helping with the program was Myrna's sister, LaNeta Carlock.  The group served icecream and cake to the Hester Home residents to celebrate August birthdays.  The birthday table was also decorated with colorful balloons.

 

Lois Zuege, granddaughter Rikki, Lois's sister Edith Roundtree and daughter Evelyn Stamm of Benkelman attended a Carlock family reunion that was held in Yuma last Saturday, August 21.

 

On Tuesday afternoon, Sophia Zuege and Laura Pearl Wall drove out to the Dale Faylor home for a short visit.

 

Rumor is that Sophia Zuege had her 92nd birthday last week.  Son, Albert, came and took her to his home for the occasion.  We were unable to contact her for details and confirmation before newstime.   

Haigler Happenings - August 16, 2010

Friday, August 13, at 3:15 p.m., the restoration of the Country Schoolhouse 67 South building in Haigler was completed.  All inside and outside work is done.  It was 3 years ago this month that the schoolhouse was moved from the cornfield west of town to its current location on Porter Avenue.  On Saturday morning, a piano was moved into the schoolhouse; and in the coming weeks, more school desks, furniture, and furnishings that have been so generously donated will be cleaned, repaired where needed, and moved into the building.  Hopefully, the project will be near completion for the 3rd annual Tumbleweed Festival scheduled for Saturday, October 23.  Plan now to attend and see the Country Schoolhouse 67 South Museum.

Tea at the Haigler White House Revisited was the theme of a morning tea party brunch on Saturday morning, hosted by LaNeta Carlock.  Honored guests were her grand nieces visiting from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina:  Hannah Reed and Lucy Walker Mulligan; and her niece, Daniela Webster from Iowa City, Iowa.  Others attending were LaNeta's sisters, Myrna Mulligan and Galena Webster.   Everyone enjoyed the menu of peppermint tea, sparkling strawberry kiwi water,  cucumber sandwiches,  butterfly chicken salad sandwiches, oatmeal cookies, fresh melons,  and mints.  The tea party was in memory of the Christmas Tea of 2005 when all were in attendance at what was to be the last tea party together with their mother, grandmother, and great grandmother- Opal Collicott.    Pictures, memories, and stories of that tea were shared; and a short story  was read by Hannah.  The story was written by her grand uncle, Stan Carlock; and looked into the future years from now when the girls would be old, return to Haigler, and remember their teas at the Haigler White House.

Lois Zuege and her sister Edith Roundtree drove to McCook, NE, last week for business and shopping.  Veda Douglass visited Lois in her home on Tuesday.

Visitors at the Dale Faylor home on Wednesday of last week were Lois Zuege and granddaughter Rikki .

New "OLD" Stories

We continue to add stories and updates to the Genealogy Trails site for Dundy County.  If you haven't visited the page for awhile, you might want to hop over and read "The Roundup", "When the Town was Shot Up", "The Dew Drop Saloon" or "Dundy County Recreation"; the latest, newest OLD stories.

The Dundy County Historical Society and most particularly, Bill Hardwick have been instrumental in contributing to the Genealogy Trails site.  Their focus is preserving the history of the county, so they have a wonderful collection of memorabilia and documents at the Dundy County Museum.  If you haven't been there for awhile, pay a visit soon to learn more about the "roots" of our county.
