Beulah Oster's 95th Birthday

WHERE IS HAIGLER?

May/2012
Haigler Alumni Luncheon
Albert Zuege- 50th year class- host

WHERE IS HAIGLER?
Haigler is where------

Porter Avenue intersects Hwy. 34.
The 2 great river systems—the north fork of the Republican and the Arickaree merge.
Where Floyd Trembly would sell you a bag of groceries.
Bob Schorzman would fix your tv.
Milford Andres would cut your hair and—
Lloyd Crabtree would repair your car.

It is where—

Dick Bannister became a legend on the basketball court.
Bill McVey played guitar and—
Marie Sass played the violin.
It’s where Charlie and Glena Collicott delivered milk in a Model A and—
Their granddaughter Galena set a state record in the 50 yard dash.

Where, with one stop at Charlie Roach’s; you could arrange to get a well drilled, your windmill
fixed, buy a casket, and make your final arrangements.
It’s where Lester Adams kept your propane tank full all winter.
Where little Jimmy Trembly climbed to the top of the coop elevator in 15 minutes—and it took
the Haigler Fire Dept. the rest of the day to get him down.

It is where Dale Faylor, Hughie Wall, and Stan Zuege led the Haigler Colts Baseball team to
victory nearly every Sunday afternoon—
Where Dale Smith kept the schoolhouse clean; and
Ralph Oster kept the water running (but only native Haiglerites could drink it)

Haigler—that is where:
Neighbors are still neighbors.
Friends are real friends.
And some of the best people on earth went to school.

Haigler Author - Book Release

YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW—ALWAYS A ROSE is the title of the just published book by local Haigler author, LaNeta L. Carlock. The collection of poetry and writings is about happiness and sorrow, celebrations and remembrances, dreams and realities, travels and home, life and death. Those who have read the book say the author shares her deepest feelings and thoughts with the reader. Each line comes from the heart. The book is a true love story and kaleidoscope of life.

The book cover is of a rose, and the reader will often read of the symbolic meaning of a rose and discover many a rose in the lovely colored pictures that accompany the writings. LaNeta says, “Whether a single rose stem, a bouquet of roses, or the roses in my gardens; the rose has always been special to me. Tomorrow is never promised to any of us; we should live every day as if it were our last.”

LaNeta has been writing for more than 50 years. She is a published author with McGraw-Hill Book Company, The International Society of Poets, professional magazines, and numerous other publications. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Nebraska, and had over 30 years of experience in education and business before her retirement. LaNeta and her husband Stan now live in their hometown of Haigler, Nebraska. Both were born and raised in southwest Nebraska, left after high school graduation, and returned 38 years later—in 1996. The last 16 years have been spent ‘giving back to their community’—especially the preservation and restoration of the One-Room Country Schoolhouse Museum and the development of the Cornerstone Museum in Haigler.

For more information, contact LaNeta Carlock, PO Box 144, Haigler, NE 69030-0144, 308-297-3226 or email carlock@bwtelcom.net. Books will be available in book stores, The Benkelman Post, Haigler Family Market, Basically Business in Wray, The Inklings in Holyoke, and New Life Christian Book Store in McCook. Cost of the book is $15. Sales proceeds will be donated to the Haigler Cornerstone Museum.

2012 Haigler Alumni Reunion

Haigler Alumni/Memorial Weekend will soon be here.  We hope Haigler Alumni, family, and friends are making plans to attend the scheduled activities throughout the weekend of May 25-28.

The 50th year reunion class  will be hosting the Saturday afternoon openhouse at the Haigler Legion Community Building from 2-5 p.m.  Do stop by to visit with friends and enjoy refreshments.

On Sunday, May 27, the traditional potluck 12 noon luncheon will be held at the Community Buildingg (now air conditioned).  Following the luncheon and program, the completed Haigler One-Room Country Schoolhouse Museum and the developing Haigler Cornerstone Museum will hold open houses for you.

The 2012 Mikey Ride

The Mikey Ride will be July 21st this year with a stop in Haigler around noon as always.

You can check it out on The Mikey Ride facebook page as well as the web page http://themikeyride.com.   This year the Mikey Ride will be helping a couple  who had a baby born early at 1.2 pounds and are faced with a lot of medical bills; now as well as down the road.

The Mikey Ride is to help someone like this. Last year they were able to raise over $10,000 for a young lady with cancer.

Help from everyone will make this better than ever. There will be a free will donation and a live auction of donated items. The Maupins fed over 400 people in our yard last year at the Mikey ride.  Everyone is welcome.

The Ride begins at Mike Maupin's house in Wallace at 9:00 am on July 21, 2012.  The meal and auction will be at 5:00pm.

Thank you for your help in getting the information out there.

-Mike Maupin Class of 1972
