ReplyDeleteWow,
Thanks for yet another memory! When I saw that ad for Douglass Six Service and Repair the memories came flooding back.
In 1967 I was five years old and I
"helped" my Dad at that old shop. One of the Mills Boys used to bring candy, cookies, or, my favorite, ice cream sandwiches, to the shop for me. He always said that he found them in the highway and I thought it was amazing the stuff he found in the road.
I was constantly on the lookout for these goodies myself but could never find anything in the highway. I guess at some point it crossed my mind that an ice cream sandwich laying in the highway in August had about the same chance as the proverbial "snowball". Anyway, wherever he "found" the treats, they were were tasty!
Once I wanted an orange and Dad gave me money to go Trembly's Grocery Store to buy one. I went and picked out the finest one in the store and when I went to pay for it Mattie asked me if I was sure that I had what I wanted. Of course, I replied. It was the perfect orange!
When I got back to the shop Dad asked me why I bought a lemon instead of an orange. Not to admit that I didn't know the difference I told him that I wanted a lemon and, with quite a lot of difficulty, I ate it! Boy, pride is a funny thing but I did learn a very valuable lesson.
Thanks Again,
Roger Douglass
Me too, Roger... this ad brought back memories of going to town with my dad to get a piece of machinery welded or repaired. The place he always went was to Lloyd Douglass's shop. I learned to know all the nooks and crannies at all the shops around town, including Vic Stasser's shop, where my uncle Lloyd Crabtree worked for a long time.
ReplyDeleteGlad the "lemon" didn't turn you "sour".. hehe!
ROGER, I WENT TO YOUR DAD'S SHOP WITH MY BYCYCLE. I WANTED A SPROCKET ON THE BACK HUB THE SAME AS THE FRONT. ( I WAS GOING TO HAVE A HIGH SPEED BIKE.) WELL THE SPROCKET GOT WELDED IN TO PLACE AND CHAIN WAS RE-INSTALLED. OKAY, NOW IS TRIAL TIME. I PEDALLED AT THE PACE OF A TURTLE--THATS WHEN I FIRST LEARNED ABOUT RATIO'S I STILL REMEBER YOUR DAD LAUGHING HEARTILY AT THE SPEED I WAS GOING.
