Fund Drive to preserve and re-purpose Haigler School Building

TO:                  FELLOW HAIGLER ALUMNI
FROM:            Stan and LaNeta Carlock ( Class of 1958 and 1960)
SUBJECT:      YOU ARE INVITED!
DATE:            December 1, 2013

You are invited to be a very important part of the future of Haigler, Dundy County, Nebraska—the small town community that helped in your past to get you started in life—and is now asking for your help to sustain future generations.

As most of you know, the Haigler Elementary School building and historical gymnasium were closed at the end of the 2013 school year.  All Haigler Alumni artifacts were graciously given to the Haigler Country Schoolhouse and Cornerstone Museums—where the memories of the Haigler Public Schools (1887-2013) shall continue to live on.  While the loss of the school to the Village of Haigler is great; times change; we must change with the times; and sometimes, change presents opportunities.  Yes, there are those who will shrug and say, “Why bother?”—but there are others of us (and we hope this includes YOU) who say,”We must try!”  It is like the saying, “When you have been handed lemons, you make lemonade.”

So, on behalf of a group of concerned citizens/taxpayers in the Haigler and Dundy County community; a proposal to purchase the Haigler Elementary School and gymnasium was submitted to the Dundy County Stratton Public Schools Board of Education.  Though the Board could have sold to others for a much higher dollar amount, they accepted our offer to preserve and re-purpose the buildings for community service.   New owners will be the Haigler Community Foundation—now being organized.

The fund drive has begun to raise $50,000 for the purchase dollars and first year’s operating expenses.  Though we are confident the needed funds will be raised; WE NEED YOUR HELP!  All donations are tax deductible; and you choose whether 2013 or the New Year 2014 is best for you.  Some of you can give $1,000 or more; some $500 or more; some $100 or more; some $25 or more.  Every dollar helps to meet the fund drive goal.  Please--WE NEED YOU TO DONATE!  Beginning with our pioneer heritage and continuing for over 125 years, this community has a strong tradition of caring individuals who make things happen.  We are counting on you to help continue this tradition—to help sustain the Village of Haigler for future generations—through your financial support of the Cornerstone Center for Community Service and the Haigler Community Foundation.

It is the ‘season of giving.’  We trust your name will be among the Haigler Alumni donors who gave when asked to help.  Thank you—and all best wishes for the holiday season and the New Year 2014.
