The Annual Mikey Ride

Hello Everyone

Susie and I would like to invite all of you to the 2014 Mikey Ride on July 19th . As always we are trying to help out someone we know who is having medical issues. I have attached a poster so you can read about who we are trying to help this year. If you don’t ride we would like to invite you to come to dinner and take part in the evening of fine foods and beverages and the auction in which we help raise money. Also if you can come to the dinner and want to bring a cover dish I’m sure it will be used. If you are unable to attend but wish to help out you can send a check to Mike Maupin, PO Box 212 Wallace NE. 69169 please make checks out to Laura Burke who we are helping out this year.

Again we hope you are able to attend we are not able to do this out without the help of all of you. Also please feel free to make copies of this poster and hand it out to others or post it where you think it will be seen.

Thank you

Susie and Mike Maupin

Soda Fountain Memory

Do you miss the old soda fountains in the Rexall Drug Store?  You can still order a root beer float or an Old Fashioned Chocolate Frosty from that same counter which is now in the Dundy County Museum in Benkelman.

Here is a nice article in the McCook Gazette

Soda fountain is more than a 'Grandma thing'

Tractors Across Nebraska

On June 1, 2014, the Tractor Relay Across Nebraska left Nebraska City  for the trip across Nebraska on Hiway 136 & 34.  On Sunday, June 8, they arrived in Haigler, the last city in Nebraska. It was really something to see all these tractors come into town!

We had cookies & tea at the Legion Community Bldg., then toured Haigler Museums and Cornerstone Center and journeyed through the hills and pastures to the 3 Corners Site.  Everyone went back to town via Hwy. 34 and met at the Haigler Country Cafe for chicken fried steaks.

Along the 450 mile trip, this group, sponsored by the Nebraska Antique Farming Association, collected more than $4000 in donations for American Legion's Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW).

Visit the Nebraska Antique Farming Association on Facebook for more information about this annual event.

Also visit The Haigler Blog on Facebook where there are more pictures of their visit to Haigler.

Cornerstone Center Grand Opening held in Haigler

May 24 was a busy day in Haigler, NE.  People from the tri-state area joined the local community in celebrating the grand opening of the Cornerstone Center for Community Service (former Haigler Elementary School).

Throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Haigler Community Foundation hosted an open house at the facility.  Self-guided tour sheets provided guest the opportunity to see changes in the repurposing of the buildings and to see what is now available for rental possibilities.

The Sunshine Thrift and the Artists/Crafters Fair had many happy shoppers and the library and conference room was the meeting place for refreshments and great buys on many library books.

Hadley Barrett, PRCA Rodeo Hall of Fame announcer, Ron Scott and the Roadmasters and Kelly Hayward all arrived late afternoon to begin setting up the stage for music and dance that evening.  By 8:30 p.m., people were coming in the doors with their dancing shoes on and ready to dance.  Entertainers were terrific and everyone enjoyed the evening.

At intermission attendees tried to shoot a basket on the court to win a T-shirt. Hot dogs, chips, water and coffee were served from the kitchen until midnight.  There was no admission charge but attendees were most generous with their free will donations to the Haigler Community Foundation.

The Cornerstone Center for Community Service is now open for business.  It is hoped that all of our local surrounding communities here in southwest Nebraska will utilize the rental facility opportunities.
