Haigler Happenings - November 15, 2010

Karen Harford left from DIA on the 25th of October for Atlanta, Georgia to make the acquaintance of her latest grandchild -- Caden (Cade) Everett Mayo who was born on October 29, 2010.  He weighed in at 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 22 inches long.  This is Galen and Ashleigh Mayo's first child.  Karen returned home on November 9th after having a wonderful visit.

On Friday, November 12, the Haigler Red Hatters met on main street and car pooled to Wray to tour the Wray Museum.  Everyone really enjoyed all of the displays, stories, and period furnishings.  The Wray community has done a wonderful job of preserving their history.  Those members attending were:  Iona Maupin, Veda Douglass, Belva Olson, Ilene Erdman, Esther Erdman, Myrna Mulligan, Galena Webster, LaNeta Carlock, Joann Webster, Delores Zuege, and guest Nancy Freehling.  Following the museum tour, the group treated themselves to icecream.

Lillian Zuege - Kruse of 1048 New Hampshire ST, Lincoln, NE 68508-1155, formerly of the Haigler  community sends an obituary clipping of her son, Lyle W Kruse. A part of it is given here:  He was born 1944 in Lincoln, NE., a graduate of Lincoln Northeast, attended The University of Nebraska, Central Technical Institute, and the University of New Mexico, earning degrees in electrical and nuclear engineering....He held two patents for nuclear detection, led some of the early U.S./Russian cooperative programs for nuclear security including the project to upgrade security for Russian Railcars used in transport of nuclear weapons for dismantlement. He managed programs for nuclear security upgrades for Department of Energy facilities, The U.S Air Force Homeland Security and security upgrades for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia.  Lyle was also an on-site consultant for security systems upgrades in Oak Ridge, TN for five years.  He was 65 at the time of his death.
Lillian was born and lived in the Haigler area until her marriage to Mr. Kruse, who is now deceased.

Lois Zuege returned to Colorado on Saturday from accompanying her granddaughter, Rikki, back to her home and spending some time with her daughter.  On Sunday night Lois' mother, Mercil Tiff, passed  away.  No funeral arrangements have been made at this time.  Our sympathies go out to Lois at this time of loss.

Also our sympathies go out to Dode Faylor and her family.  Her brother, Leroy Rathbun, passed away Sunday night at the age of 78.  Memorial Services will be held in Denver and graveside services will be held in Haigler.  No dates or other details have been set at this time.  Leroy was a brother-in-law to Richard Wall.

Sophia Zuege's son, Albert, Jr. attended the Smoker in Haigler on Saturday and stayed with his mother Saturday night.

Laura Pearl Wall visited last Monday, November 8, at the Bob and MerryLu Simmons home near Beecher Island.  Young Taya Simmons was there also.

Last weeks description of Haigler left out and important place.  The legion hall on main street - a place with lots of space.
It is used for many occasions, from voting to wedding receptions - Alumni and family reunions - don't know of any exceptions.

Haigler Happenings - November 08, 2010

Saturday October 30, Jim and Jerrie Wheaton went to Cope to attend the funeral of Jerrie's great Aunt Avis Galbreath.  The day was spent with family and friends. The following Monday Jerrie was also back in Cope to help move furniture and visit with her Uncle Tom who was there from Florida. They went to Minden this weekend to help Adam and Stephanie with some house projects and returned home on Sunday.
Alfred and Jennie Zuege were down to see Sophia Zuege over the week end.  Sophia and Jennie went out to visit Helen Brown and spent an afternoon with her.
Dwight Wall visited Laura Pearl Wall on Saturday morning.  After eating lunch in Benkelman, they drove to the home of his daughter Lyndsay and husband Cody Lashley near McCook for the afternoon.  After touring the lovely home and yard they enjoyed eating snacks and watching the Nebraska - Iowa State football game.
MerryLu and Bob Simmons helped Laura Pearl Wall with an electric light project on Thursday morning of last week.
Mel and Norma Fisher and Floy Fisher drove to Sterling, CO on Saturday to attend a district meeting, featuring a special speaker, Dr. Joseph Kidder.  Dr. Kidder was born and raised in Nineveh, Iraq.  He converted to Christianity and was beaten and left for dead by his family.  He regained consciousness and went to a friend's house and later was miraculously allowed to come to the United States to attend college and has advanced to being a Seminary Professor. There was a large group in attendance coming from Brighton, Fort Morgan, Akron, Yuma, and other surrounding areas.

Haigler is a village in Nebraska, U.S.A.
Many who are born there have grown up there and will stay.
In the southwest Corner, Colorado on the west,
Kansas on the Southside, the sun shines at it’s best.

It’s quiet and peaceful.  There’s no traffic congestion.
Yet you’ll find within it, a good business collection –
A co-op handles fuel, grain, hardware and more.
There,s a popular café and a corner grocery store.

For the guys, a pool hall to pass some time away,
two churches, and a school where children learn and play.
Then there’s the Golden Inn where Seniors meet and eat.
Tuesday is the day.  Just call and save a seat.

A Post Office is there, in the middle of the block.
Folks go pick up their mail, meet a friend and talk.
And last but not least, there is a fine Museum.
It is privately maintained, all privately collected.
Each item it contains was carefully selected.

Drive through town and have a look.  You may be impressed and anywhere you go, you’re welcomed as a guest.

Please share your news by calling 308-297-3605, e-mail ffisher@bwtelcom.net, mail Floy Fisher, P.O. Box 44, Haigler, NE 69030 or drop in news mailbox at 338 Washington Ave.
