Marriage Proposal

I ran across the following interesting paragraph on the TIME Magazine site and wonder if there is "more to this story" somewhere.

In Denver, when Miles Brunswig asked Lucille Stute to marry him, she refused. He went home to Haigler, Neb., put a note in his home-town paper announcing his marriage to another girl. Lucille Stute took a train for Haigler to see what was what, found there was no other girl, married Miles Brunswig.

Hello from Colorado

Well, it's been a long time since I wrote--we've had a very busy year.
Jeri, my youngest daughter, got married in January to Steve McEwen, who is an engineer with Raytheon in Tucson--Jeri is an RN at Northwest hospital. We are so lucky to have them living just a few blocks away from us, so we get to see them and Kayla almost every day. Kayla is 15 and a sophomore in high-school.

We feel very fortunate now, since I've retired, to be able to spend the entire summer in Colorado at the cabin. This is a view from our back deck after a late snow (on June 14)

In May we went to Haigler for the Memorial Day alumni reunion and got to see several folks that I hadn't seen for probably 50 years--Almeda Bier, Russell Hoover, Albert Zuege, Jr, LaNeta Carlock, and Louise Zuege--among others. I just missed seeing Karen (White) Lindell by a few minutes.

Summer is about over, and it's almost time to head back to Arizona for the winter. There's more excitement in store when we get there. We are getting a new grandbaby in November. I think Kayla is more excited than anyone else about a new little sister!

Also, I think all of my sisters and my brother will be together with our mother for Thanksgiving. This will truly be a time to give thanks!

The Third Annual Great US Highway 36 Treasure Hunt

September 19-20-21, 2008 there will be miles of garage sales and yard sales all along the 400 miles of U.S. 36 Highway in Kansas from Missouri to Colorado.

If you live near this highway, this is a good chance to "recycle" those things you don't need or want anymore.

Start cleaning out your STUFF now and arrange to set up your sale along Highway 36 to give the treasure hunters a chance to go home with wonderful "finds".

OR maybe you are a "treasure hunter" who needs more STUFF!! This would be the weekend to hitch up the trailer and head out on Friday to find things that you NEED!

The Treasure Hunt is sponsored by the U.S. 36 Highway Association & Local Tourism organizations/Chamber of Commerce.

Read more about it HERE.

Take a Virtual Vacation

As I was installing some of my favorite things onto my new computer, I got sidetracked on Google Earth and ran across some pictures posted to Google earth on Panoramio by Kent Hoffman. Some of them are of places in and around Haigler, but also include some fancinating pictures from around the world taken in the 40's, 50's and 60's.

You might want to go take a look!

The Bluegrass Festival

Bob Arnold, a friend of Bill McVey, as all of the members of the Bluegrass Shieks were, spoke with me on Sunday afternoon while they were setting up for their show that afternoon. The band started coming out to Haigler after Bill died to keep in touch with the McVey family and have been coming out most every year since 1991. The memorial for Bill has grown into the Bluegrass Festival and has grown a lot, thanks to the many people who work hard to put it together. The band looks forward to coming to Haigler every year.

They were one of the three bands scheduled for the afternoon of bluegrass entertainment. The other bands were The Chapmans and Highway 385.

The Festival had several food booths, raffles, fundraisers and drawings and after the formal entertainment, there was an open jam session where the local talent was exceptional.

Floy Ruggles, the Haigler Correspondent for the area papers reports:

The Bluegrass Festival at the Haigler Park was again well attended. Among the many fine musicians was a seven year old boy, Elan Dennis, who played violin and sang, along with his Grandmother, Mary Ellen Weathers, who was also his teacher, both from Yuma, and Barry Brown from Eckley who played Guitar. The food and drink booths, including the pie and ice cream booth, were kept busy satisfying appetites of kids and grownups.

One booth providing Walking Tacos and a variety of drinks was operated by a C.W.F. group who were raising funds for a two-week trip to Washington, DC. On this trip they will visit the 4-H Convention Center, learn how the Government works - how to write bills, etc. They also find time for sight seeing like the National Momuments, Niagara Falls and other points of interest.

Angela Crouse and Meg Peterson passed around cowboy boots for donations to help defray the expenses of the event.

Happy First Birthday to the CornerStone Museum

August 8 will be the first birthday of the Cornerstone Museum in Haigler. It was moved a year ago from the country cornfield to its new stage in life as a museum in Haigler, Nebraska, the town that calls itself "The Cornerstone of Nebraska."

I stopped this morning to see the progress on the old District 67 schoolhouse which is blooming into The CornerStone Museum. LeNeta Carlock stopped to visit with me and point out the most recent addition, a new sidewalk which has a wheelchair ramp built up to the front door and was completed two weeks ago.

Stan Carlock was at work replacing the plastic covering on the front window to protect the new subfloor from any chance of getting wet in a lucky rainstorm before they have a chance to install the windows. There are three new windows on the east side of the building with plans to have the others done within the next few weeks. The new wiring inside will provide ambient lighting in the completed building.

Be sure to stop by and see the schoolhouse if you have a chance. Sign the guestbook and put a donation in the basket provided to help with this worthwile and interesting project.

Donations can be mailed to: Save 67 South School, P.O. Box 144, Haigler, NE 69030-0144.

Tri-State Events This Weekend

Fill up your gas tank and head out today for events in Benkelman, Bird City and Haigler. The Annual Thresher and Engine Show in Bird City, Motorcycle Races in Benkelman and the Bluegrass Breakdown in Haigler should keep you busy enjoying the planned events and visiting with neighbors and friends, new and old.

I might see some of you around this weekend. I stopped in Haigler yesterday to drop my mother, Alice, off at her sister Floy's house and I spent the night with my sister, Leah in Sainty. We plan to drive to Yuma this morning to hear my cousin preach at the SDA church there, then will spend some time with family before heading back to Sainty. Before returning to Lincoln on Sunday, I'll drop by the park in Haigler for lunch and a quick handshake or two.

Hope to see you around.
