Happy Birthday - Sherri Gregory

It's my birthday today!  I am happy to be the age I am. (65)  It is 284 days until retirement for me and I am excited to be counting down to October 31, 2010.

I am enjoying a day at work in an office where I love the people I work with and the work I do.  My daughter and family are taking me out to eat tonight at my favorite restaurant.

The weather is clearing up and even though the sun hasn't peaked through yet, I am hopeful it soon will.

It's a great day and time in history to be alive.

Ice Jams on the Platte

Russ Hoover shared a link to an article about ice jams on the Platte River, which is frozen over.  This could cause flooding and major problems when it melts.

Banks in Haigler

Just wondering if anyone has any information about the Drovers & Traders State Bank in Haigler. I know there was one bank that was the old post office on the sw corner of main street and the hyw. There was also one where the post office is now but not sure which one this was.

I've looked in "Dundy County Heritage", the 1976 Haigler Centennial Book, the 1986 Haigler Book and found some references to the Drover's and Trader's Bank building.

The first in an article by Florence Clegg "History of Haigler -- 1926 to 1937" on Page 48 of the 1976 Haigler book... "The old bank building on the highway which housed the Post Office for many years until 1970 is vacant. The Post Office is in the remodeled Drover's and Trader's bank building."

Another is on page 160 of the 1976 book in a story written by Carroll C. Jenkins. "In 1916, unhappy with the service from the local bank, he, (referring to Charlie T. Jenkins) with two or three others, organized the Drover and Trader State Bank, importing Fred Crone from Missouri to run it. It survived for a few years, consolidated with the other bank then the consolidation failed."

On page 12 of the 1986 Haigler Book, Edbert B. Woods, in his story entitled "Early Haigler as I Remember It," says this: "**When there was one bank, The Haigler State Bank, located on the south side of the highway street.  A couple of years later the Drovers and Traders State Bank opened down between Armstrong's and McKee's Groceries.  Both lasted until the big depression."

McKee's Grocery on the west side of Main Street

Garnet Miller mentions the bank in his story, "Rambling Down Main Street of Haigler," on page 22 of the 1986 book.  After mentioning the W.F. Wood Building, he says,  "To the south was the temporary home of the Drovers and Traders Bank, later Dr. Earl Deal located there -- next a Barber Shop.  The Haigler News occupied the lower floor, and outside entrance led to the lower floor."

The Haigler News Office building on the east side of Main Street

Later in his story, he says, "Going back down the street and taking a stroll up the west side was the Kitzmiller Drug Store on the corner, with the ever popular soda fountain with its cool marble counter top.  Andrew Ventis General Store was next, operated by Andrew and his sister.  A variety of general merchandise was available here.

A Barber shop next door where a fella could get slicked up for twenty-five cents, and the New Drovers and Traders Bank building with its new teller windows and beautiful green and white tile floor."

The current Post Office was the Drover and Trader State Bank building

Does anyone else have information about this bank?
