
It was commemorated at the end of World War I, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
President Woodrow Wilson issued the Proclamation of expressing pride in the heroism of those who died during the war. It was originally known as World War I Armistice Day. (Truce). A name change occured in 1954 from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, making it a holiday to honor all veterans.
