A story concerning The Glen Himbergs, living south of the Huey ranch , Glen and Rosie had become very close friends of my parents, Pat and Catherine Smith.
When they received notice that their rental agreement would not be renewed, They were devastated with no place to move to. There were very few rental properties available.
Emery Swan , a local real estate salesman, was frequently attempting to sell the Boyd Hedge farm to my parents, so after consulting with Glenn and Rosie, a rental agreement was suggested, and my parents purchased the farm. A farm sale was coming up, and Dad and Glen attended. Dad bought some of the good milk cows for $6.00 and $7.00 each on a share agreement so everyone came out a winner.
One day Dad was attempting to force a partially broken saddle horse to cross a fast flowing spring fed creek north of the ranch house, when a sudden lunge caused a saddle horn to puncture Dad’s rib cage causing much pain and misery. When a surgery indicated a cancer had developed, the local Legionnaires, Leo Anderson and Ernest Erdman, encouraged him to go to the VA hospital in Cheyenne, Wyo. After the exam, it was determined necessary to transfer to the Hines VA hospital near Chicago, Ill, a Cancer clinic.
The Himbergs immediately made room for me to stay with them. It lasted for over 6 long months.
There are no words that express my sincere thanks to these wonderful folks for helping me and my family in this great time of need. My Dad returned home weighing 97 pounds minus a large portion of one lung determined to beat the odds. And he certainly did for over 40 additional years.
