Where is it? What is it?
Can anyone tell me where this church or school is located? It is somewhere west of Haigler before the state line and south of Highway 34. Eunice took this picture several years ago, and I have never personally seen this building.

It is the Sanborn School. It was the best constructed country school I ever saw, two different colors of bricks. If you go east of the Colorado-Nebraska State Line east of Laird to the first main road south it was about 5/8 of a mile south. It sat just on the north side of the Pioneer Irrigation Ditch inside a nice group of trees on the east side of the south/north bound road. When Rex Buck purchased the property several years ago he had it torn down. It was a fine majestic building. The Cleggs, Workmans, Bragg and Brown children and others attended this school.

CALVIN IS SO RIGHT ABOUT THIS BUILDING BEING SO ARTISTIC AND MAJESTIC. MY DAD TOLD ME THE BRICKS WERE GLAZED TO BE HARDENED, SO KIDS COULD NOT CARVE INTO THEM. THE LOWER HALF WERE A SEA MIST GREEN OR EMERALD GREEN (SHINEY) AND THE UPPER HALF OR 2/3 WERE A RED BRICK. THE CEILING TILES WERE VERY ORNATE AND BEAUTIFUL, A WELL CONSTRUCTED BUILDING.

Thanks... I thought it looked like the picture of the Sandborn school shown in the Haigler book, but in my mind it should have been north of hiway 34... Thanks for clearing it up... Sorry it is gone, I would have liked to see it.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like the Sanborn School House. I remember it as a red brick bldg. with a bell on top. I seems like we were considering it for a church school at one time. There were several of us that looked at it. I am glad to see the picture. There is nothing left the we could find when Ray and I were there looking for evidence of its one time existence.
