I have just received the blog thru several different channels. I went to school in Haigler until 1935, started first grade and left when I was in the fifth. My dad, Lloyd Reed, had the dairy, we delivered milk every morning to the stores and to the houses. quite a route, I enjoyed Don Harford's story of Haigler, I remember it very well, but I also can add a few things. There was a negro couple, Joe and Mollie Green that ran a cream station, we all like to go to Mollie and Joe's they were so good to all of us little ones.
My great grandmother was Grandma Ritner, Grandpa in earlier days ran a livery stable and after he passed away Grandma worked at the hotel in the kitchen for Mrs. Waggle. I don't know how long she had the hotel. Grandma was thrown from the car when they went to take her home from working in Schmutte's cafe. It caused her death.
We, my brother Leonard and later my brother Eldon would ride to town in the morning with Dad but walked home, we only lived about a mile from town, so it wasn't far. Is there any one from the class of '42 still around Haigler. That is the class I would have graduated with. I still have relatives around Haigler.
The Walls and Zuege's.
Do you remember the dirt storms, they would be so bad, the students were not allowed to leave the school unless some older person came for them, and they say these were the good old days, a matter of opinion.
Would like to hear from someone from this time era. Laverna Reed Mizner
It was Dick and Molly Green, not Joe Green.

How are you related to the Walls? I remember Bill and Stella Wall who had a Café and pool hall in Haigler. And Larry Wall, who is their grandson writes notes to the blog every once in awhile.
ReplyDeleteI also remember a lot of the Zuege family - went to school with some of them, in fact. Which family are you related to?
Do you know where your Grandpa Ritner's livery stable was located?
Also what was your mom's name before she married?
I don't remember the dust storms, but have heard my mother tell about them and how scary and awful they were. Don Smith tells about the red dirt from Oklahoma that was blown clear up to the Haigler area in his story about the Huey Ranch. It must have been an awful time. There were a lot of people who moved out of the area because of the "dirty thirties". It was a huge loss to the community when they all left.
Sorry about all the questions, but I am very interested in getting "acquainted" with people who have ever lived in Haigler. I believe we were privileged to have ever lived in that community and think it might be somewhat unique in its character and the people it produced! (but then, maybe I'm prejudiced!) Anyway, hope you have a great day and hope to hear from you again.

My mother's maiden name was Sharp, her brothers were Carl and Tom, her sister was Iva Wall. Richard that just passed away was my cousin. One of the Wall girls married a Crabtree, KC. Her name was Ada. No,I don't know where the livery stable was. I am related to Herman Zuege, his parents were Bill and Alberta. Mildred married a Stute and still lives around there. Laverna Reed Mizner
ReplyDeleteLaverna, I'm glad I asked because I remember the Carl Sharp family. I think they lived about 20 miles north of Haigler on a ranch in the sandhills. And KC Crabtree's dad, Hurley, was a brother to my grandpa Frank Crabtree. KC and Ada's twins are about my age. KC is a first cousin to my mom.
ReplyDeleteWe could look to the south from the home where I grew up and see Herman and Delores's place, which was about 1/2 a mile (maybe a mile)as the crow flys from our house. I went to school with Louise and Gary was in first grade when I was in eighth at the East 10 grade school. I also remember Mildred Stute and the boys... I believe were Kenny and Leroy??? I saw Mildred not long ago when I was in Haigler for a visit to my Aunt Floy Ruggles. (who is a cousin to KC Crabtree)
From the Class of '42:

Marty Neville lives in Chelalis, Wa.
Dorothy Peterson Blecha lives in Wray, Co.
Lillian Zuege Kruse lives in Lincoln, Ne.

Wasn't your mother's name Blanche and wasn't she a sister to Bud and Bill Wall?
Cal Freehling
Man, am I getting mixed up, you said your mother was a sister to Tom & Carl Sharp. I now have it figured out, your mother would have been a sister to Bud Wall's wife, right?
ReplyDeleteI keep in contact with Mary Sharp and Jim Sharp.
