Remember Manette Hurlock? (Manette Keeler now)
The St.Francis paper has a picture of her and another lady in the Good Samaritan Village. I guess the olden days memories about St Francis people wouldn't be of interest for the blog. But for my story that is one of the memories. For part of my sophomore year I walked over the hill and rode with them to school. Vivien, Wyndon, and little Manette. Vivien was taking post-graduate work, Wyndon a sophomore, and Manette in grade school in town. Their place had that pond full of Cherry Creek water. With a swing --a single rope with a loop to hold onto --to sail out over the water.
I wonder if Vivien is still in the home there, too. She is somewhere around or over 95 years old now.

Alice,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many connections between Haigler and St. Francis I think you should continue to share both towns and counties on the blog.
Keep the stories coming.
I have had a saying for years that "Years ago everyone between Haigler and Sainty was related, either by marriage or by accident."

Yes, I do remember the Hurlocks. Ray and I walked over to the spot where the house was supposed to be - nothing standing just some junk scattered around. I could not identify any pond where the rope swing was supposed to be. I remember the story about Windon splashing down in the pond when the rope broke. It is a pretty location but not accessable by car now.
ReplyDeleteI guess that the flood of 1935 washed the pond out. And changed the course of the creek probably too. I don't remember any reports that their house went downstream. I don't remember if they still lived there after the flood of 1935.
ReplyDeleteI think Mamma said that the water got up nearly to the front step of our house. And she stayed up all the night to watch. There was that big bank north of the house for an escape route. I was in Denver until August.
