Cicadas and Crickets

I was just sitting out on my deck enjoying the early morning "cool air" before getting ready for my work day. This morning is damp and cool after an evening storm last night and the only sound was the singing of the crickets in my yard.

On Sunday evening I was sitting on the deck resting after attacking the long grass with the mower and weed eater and there was a different sound coming from the trees! Those pesky cicadas! Their noisy song isn't the same as a cricket's happy sound. They are insistent on getting on my nerves by raising and lowering the volume level until I had to go inside to avoid them.

According to Wikapedia, the male cicada makes this noise to attract a mate and they are the longest living insect because they hibrinate and come back every year for up to 17 years. In some places they are considered "food"!!! I vote for a Cicada Harvest in my yard if anyone is interested in trying them out. However, since I have never prepared them for a meal, you will have to find recipes somewhere else.

Does anyone else feel that way about cicadas?

  1. That is funny. Recently my wife traveled from California to Haigler for Mom's 80th Birthday Party and stayed at The Lodge. While we were there we thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside with the Grandkids, listening to the cicadas. I guess, not having them in CA makes them sort of special. I realized, sitting with my family, that I miss them. Oh well, to each his or her own.

Crickets, on the other hand, irritate me to no end. Not so much outside but when the little critters get into the house the battle lines are drawn. They usually win.

  2. SHERRI, I REMEMBER THE CRICKETS AND JUNE BUGS FROM DAYS AGO, I DONT HEAR THEM OUT HEAR IN THE N.W., HOWEVER, I DO HEAR FROGS CROAKING AT CERTIAN TIMES OF THE DAY AND DURING SUMMER SEASON.

I WOULD LOOK INTO RENTING A RUMINANT TO SOLVE THE PESKY CRITTER PROBLEM IF THEY BOTHERED ME.

  3. haha!! Dallas, if I lived on a farm and owned all the trees where those cidadas reside, I might be able to do that, but I only have two trees in my yard and all the others belong to my neighbors. Also, I didn't know cows, Llamas or sheep ate cicadas!

I wouldn't mind their sound if there were only a few, but truly sometimes there are so many that the decibel level is enough to cause permanent hearing damage.

  4. ACTUALLY I WAS THINKING OF A GOAT OR GOATS THAT LITERALLY EAT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, SO WHEN ALL THE SHRUBS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED, WHAT ELSE COULD SURVIVE WHEN NOTHING IS LEFT. HMMMM!!!!!

  5. Of course! You are right! Goats would eat them and the trees and the fence and the siding off the garage! Then they would climb on top of the car and be so proud of themselves.
