Progress Report: Gravestone Photos
We're finished with Dundy county. Digital pictures and other information from the following cemeteries in Dundy County have been uploaded to the Internet: Ash Grove, Benkelman, Boston, Haigler, Hayward, Hiawatha, Highland, Hughes, Kerst, Max, Mt. Zion, Ough, Parks, Pleasant Valley, Rollwitz, Sandwich, Sleepy Hollow, and St. Paul. A total of 4,279 photos have been uploaded resulting in 7,393 individual records. Thank you, Verna Lemon, for taking and uploading the pictures of the gravestones in the Ash Grove cemetery.
Some of the cemeteries were essentially abandoned and overgrown. Unfortunately, we could not find all the grave sites listed in the burial book records for those cemeteries.
We invite everyone to log on to http://www.nebraskagravestones.org/ to view the gravestone photos. Towards the top of that web site, click on Cemeteries, which will bring up a screen with a drop-down list of counties. Then click on "Dundy". Clicking on the name of the cemetery will bring up an alphabetical listing. Clicking on any alphabetical listing will result in a picture of that item.
If any one notices mistakes or omissions, we would appreciate it if you would let Bill Hardwick know. His email address is **[email address removed for security] or he may be reached at **[address and phone number removed]
In addition to Dundy county, Bill has taken and uploaded pictures of Eden cemetery in northwest Hitchcock county and Meadow Lawn cemetery in Hayes county at Hamlet, NE. He is also working with three other people in Champion, Imperial, and Palisade to upload pictures they have taken of four other cemeteries.
We hope all of you enjoy the pictures that have been taken and unloaded. So far here in Nebraska more than 100,000 pictures have been taken and uploaded by Nebraska volunteers.
In addition to the photos of gravestones, Bill is also redoing the obituaries for this area which were collected over the years by Everett Sutton and Lucille Edwards. Those obituaries and cemetery information are being submitted to http://genealogytrails.com/neb/dundy/index.htm for inclusion at that location. Sherri Gregory, a former Haiglerite, is responsible for maintaining that site for Dundy county and is doing a tremendous job. Please visit that location to see all the information Sherri has already accumulated and posted and has planned. Genealogytrails is an ongoing project around the country, also manned by volunteers.
Sherri is also responsible for http://haigler.blogspot.com/ which has a wealth of information about Haigler and vicinity.
We much enjoy all of these genealogical and historical undertakings. The people behind these projects are always looking for volunteers to work in all states and all counties and welcome any information anyone may wish to provide.
Check 'em out!
