Haigler High School - Flash from the Past - 1978

I received a note from Joshua Ochoa, who attended Haigler school in 1977/1978.  I just finished scanning the 1978 yearbook, so have clipped some pictures of Joshua's kindergarten class as well as the classes his sisters were in.

Here is a recent picture of the Haigler School.

Come on over to "Haigler High School" on facebook and look for old friends there.

Thanks for adding this on facebook. I started Kindergarten in the front left lower level classroom in the old Haigler School Building. My teacher was Ms. Harford in 1977/78 school year. My sisters (Gail & Holly) were by then in Jr. High, and my sister Gail was an Eaglette cheerleader. Though it has been many years since we lived in rural Nebraska (1975-1980) our family still remembers fondly the village and the wonderful people of Haigler. Our farm was 15 miles NE of Haigler on six thousand acres of beautiful rolling sandhills. The area was still relatively undeveloped as there were no telephone lines near our house. The only way to make a call was from my mother's mobile car telephone which was quite a novelty in the mid-1970s. Our nearest neighbors were the Yosts, and all of us kids have fond memories of riding the bus to and from school. By the way, I'm curious, a friend of ours who passed through the area in the '90s said the old school was gone, and replaced with a smaller one level community building. What happened to the old school? Thanks Josh

Hi Joshua, Doug Douglas, the creator of this page, will be glad you joined and stopped by. I am helping him with links and monitoring it.

If you don't mind, I'll share your note with him. Also, I don't know if you have visited "The Haigler Blog"
http://haigler.blogspot.com, but I would love to post your note there along with pictures of your class and your sisters' classes. Would that be okay with you.

Go over to the blog and check it out and let me know.

The high school was closed in about 1984 and consolidated with Benkelman and Stratton. The Dundy County High School is located in Benkelman. They tore down the old school and built a new grade school in Haigler. The gymnasium is still standing. I will also post a picture of the new school along with your note.

Thanks so much for writing. I love hearing from "Haiglerites" past and present....

Sure feel free to post my note. Would love to see some old pics of that time. I'll definately check out the Haigler blog. Thanks to both you and Doug. I think there was a Douglas girl either in my kindergarten class or in the following grades. Thanks

The Douglass in your class was Brad Douglass. His Dad is T Wayne Douglass (Terry) Terry is on the Haigler High School Page. It is possible to make contact with Brad there if you want to.

  2. The Haigler school closed it's jr/sr high section in May 1986 when it consolidated with Benkleman to become Dundy County Schools, having less than 16 high school students for two consecutive years. Until then Haigler was the smallest high school in Nebraska. Stratton did not consolidate with Dundy County until 2008.
