Uncle Billy is George William Haigler, who is expected to turn 80 this September, born in Cameron, SC, worked as a mathematician for NASA in Virginia helping to put us on the moon.
I am Dave Haigler, a Texas lawyer since 1973 and now a disability judge with Social Security in Shreveport. I was born in 1945 in Charleston, where my mom is from.
My dad was Dr. D.J. Haigler, a science professor at Columbia College who died in 2001, born 1924. He probably got cancer from visiting Hiroshima too soon after the bomb while serving in the Navy during WWII.
My granddad was Decatur L. Haigler, 1896-1981, who served as county superintendent of education and was a farmer.
My great-granddad was David Whitfield Haigler, 1866-1957, who was a farmer and involved in education as well. He has a building named for him at Newberry College in Newberry, SC. My ancestors were all Lutheran, but we're Presbyterian now.
I have a son in Dallas and a daughter & grandson in Houston.
We are descended from the Haiglers who settled near Fleabite Creek in Orangeburg County, SC, in 1752. My uncle and sister still own 400 acres of farm land there. The old family homestead is now a B&B.
Haigler, Neb., is a lot like Cameron, SC, where we are all from.
We were told that Jake hailed from Pennsylvania, and we could not find him anywhere in our genealogical records.

ReplyDeleteI had always wanted to know how Haigler got that name, for my grandfather homesteaded a piece of land north of Haigler where he raised his family.Years after that my father rented a piece of land east of Haigler which my grandmother on my mother's side owned. My grandfathers name was Pennell, and my dads name was Pennell.
I am in my 80's and often wondered how Haigher got its name.
Thank you for your interesting story.
Gene Pennell
