Restoration is nearing completion on the old district 67 schoolhouse and surrounding schoolyard. A few items are yet to be added and finishing touches to be made on the building. The Carlocks have put an enormous amount of time, and loving effort into this project, making it a spectacular point of interest in Haigler.
Charlie and Myrna Mulligan traveled to Denver, CO, on Monday, August 2nd, where they met their son, Rich, and granddaughters, Hannah Reed and Lucy, from Mt. Pleasant, SC, who had made the flight from Charleston, SC. From Denver, the group enjoyed dinner at Mimi's in Boulder and then journeyed on to Estes Park, CO. They spent from Monday to Wednesday in Estes Park enjoying the Rocky Mountain National Park; Fun City; roasting marshmallows and hot dogs in a fire pit by the Fall River, where they stayed in cabins at Castle Mountain Lodge and exploring the area. They all arrived in Haigler on Wednesday evening and will be guests in the home of Charlie and Myrna until Tuesday, August 10th.
Albert and Jeannie Zuege of Hot Springs, S.D. and a relative, Corlett Appy, from Harrisburg, PA, visited Sophia Zuege on Tuesday, August 3. They all went to St. Francis to visit with Ella May Keller.
The 9th annual Haigler Bluegrass Breakdown held on Sunday afternoon in the Haigler Park was another outstanding performance. The Chapmans of Ozark, Missouri and The McLemores from Colby, Kansas provided wonderful bluegrass music for the crowds attending. Presented by many sponsors and the Haigler Improvement Committee, proceeds go towards village improvements and continuing the HIC scholarship.
Haigler was once again the site of birthday party celebrations this past week. Friday, August 6, Sophia Zuege hosted a brunch at her home. Attending were Laura Pearl Wall, LaNeta Carlock, and Myrna Mulligan of Haigler; Myrna's granddaughters from South Carolina: Hannah and Lucy; Merry Lu Simmons of Beecher Island, CO and her granddaughter, Amber; and Sophia's daughter in law, Jeannie Zuege of South Dakota. August birthdays celebrated were Jeannie, Hannah, and Sophia.
Friday evening, August 6, another birthday party celebration was held on the properties and in the gardens of Stan and LaNeta Carlock. Their nephew and grandnieces from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina were the honored guests: Richard Mulligan and daughters, Hannah Reed and Lucy Walker--celebrating birthdays #39, #11, and #8. Everyone enjoyed a hamburger and hotdog cookout, followed by birthday cakes and icecream, and opening of cards and gifts. Richard, as was his brother, Skip, who was in Haigler a couple weeks ago with his family; used to come to Haigler as small boys and spend the summers with their grandparents, LaVoine and Opal Collicott. So, this birthday celebration brought back many happy memories for Richard--and sharing of stories with his daughters. Others attending the celebration were Stan and Galena Webster, Darrell Webster and friend, Lisa; Daniela Webster of Iowa City, Iowa; and Richard's parents, Charlie and Myrna Mulligan of Haigler.
Jeannie Zuege of Hot Springs, SD came on Thursday to visit Sophia Zuege, Laura Pearl Wall and other relatives and friends. Attending the Blue Grass Festival on Sunday was high on her list of things to do.
Bob and MerryLu Simmons, Laura, Madison and Spence Perila, Amber Simmons and Jeannie Zuege visited in the home of Laura Pearl Wall after the Blue Grass program on Sunday.
The Caleb Wall family of Eustis, NE and Dwight Wall of Lewellen, visited Laura Pearl on Saturday.
On Sunday afternoon, following the Haigler Bluegrass performance, Jeannie Zuege of South Dakota, MerryLu and Bob Simmons and 4 of their grandchildren visited the Carlock gardens, Green's Arboreteum, the Roach House, and the Haigler White House.
