Haigler Elementary School Students kicked off the 3rd Annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival on Friday morning, October 22.  They decorated pumpkins for all the festival grounds and also decorated a fall Halloween tree for events to be held on Saturday, October 23.  Students and their teachers also enjoyed touring the Country Schoolhouse Museum.  The morning concluded with refreshments of Halloween cookies and punch.  Many of the students also attended the Festival on Saturday.
3rd Annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival---Great Day!

Saturday, October 23, was a great day in Haigler!  The village was bustling with cars and people coming to attend the Festival events.  That morning, 10 garage sale sites and 14 families hosted garage sales throughout Haigler.  At 1 p.m. the barbecue began on the Country Schoolhouse Museum Grounds.  Joe and LaRue Jay of Laird, Colorado, had their cookers going for tasty hamburgers and hotdogs.  Baked beans, potato chips, and drinks were also on the menu.  Homemade pies and icecream were served in the Golden Inn Senior Center.  Musical entertainment throughout the afternoon was provided by The Garage Bunch of Burlington, Colorado.  LaVoine Smith, former Haiglerite, was a member of the band.  The schoolhouse bell rang for all the different events--treasure hunts, pinatas treats, free drawings for door prizes, and cake and dessert walks on the Maypole carousel merry-go-round.  Decorated tumbleweeds were on display and prizes awarded.  Be sure to drive by and see the lighted one still on display on the windmill--and also the peacock tumbleweed in the Haigler Cafe.
Maypole awards were presented to individuals who have made above and beyond contributions and support for the Country Schoolhouse Museum 3 year project.  This year's awards went to Mearl Richard of Benkelman, Nebraska; Steven and Jody Crouse and family (for donating the schoolhouse from their cornfield) and the Carlock brothers--Marv and Stan for their vision and endless hours of work on the project.
Weather cooperated, the fog and rain lifted, and sunshine was out for the afternoon.  Events concluded with a spook parade for kids of all ages.  At least 200 people from the tri-state area attended this year's festival.  Everyone had a great time.  Plan now to attend next year's festival in October, 2011.

Jim and Jerrie Wheaton went to Minden and Kearney this past weekend to visit their children.  They helped Adam and Stephanie with some house projects.  Brent also helped.  Then the whole family went out to dinner and played games.

Wednesday Jerrie went to Cope and she and her mom did some painting for her uncle.  Jerrie and her mom also went to the Arickaree School where Clara has been walking.  They both walked and got some visiting in as well.

Jeannie Zuege of Hot Springs, SD is visiting Sophia Zuege and Laura Pearl Wall and other relatives and friends.  She enjoyed the tumbleweed celebration.

Sunday dinner guests in the Bob and MerryLu Simmons home were Dwight Wall, Jeannie Zuege, Mr and Mrs Jim Sandean and Quentin, Tonya, and Taya Simmons, Randy Perila Family and Laura Pearl Wall.

Albert Jr. and Ginny Zuege stayed with Sophia Zuege Friday night and returned home on Saturday.

Sylvia Bliss of Goodland, KS visited Sophia Zuege on Saturday and Sunday. She attended the Tumbleweed Festival on Saturday.

On Friday evening Sophia Zuege's guests were Eleanor Keller, Pauline Bates, Jeannie Zuege and Albert Jr. and Ginny Zuege.

Lyle and Beverly Pitts of Deshler, Nebraska were weekend guests of Stan and LaNeta Carlock at the Haigler White House.  They came to attend the Tumbleweed Festival.  The Pitts were recipients of the first Maypole Award for their efforts in getting the Maypole carousel merry-go-round for the Country Schoolhouse 67 South.
