I left Haigler with my family and
moved to Yuma, CO in 1946. My father was Vern Mendenhall, manager of the
Farmers Co-op. I left Yuma in 1947 for college. Since that time
I've been many places. I became an officer in the US Navy and a geologist
in the oil business. At 83 I am the last of my family living.
We owned the Buffalo Creek Fish Hatchery. Moved from it into town in
1938. Times were tough. The hiring of my father as manager of the
"Elevator" saved our bacon. Mayme and Vern are buried at
Lincoln, NE., my brother Maurice at Denver and my sister Phyllis at Woodward,
OK. My wife, Ruth, and I are living at home in Midland, TX. We had
two children. Our daughter had two daughters and our son had a daughter
and a son. All are living.
There may be some around Haigler
who remember the family if not specifically me. Gerald (Jerry)
Mendenhall
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI remember the Mendenhall family, in fact, I still think of the house you lived in as the Mendenhall house! My sister Dorothy was in your class at Haigler, and I was her 'tag-a-long' sister who loved to walk around Haigler in the evenings. I especially remember when WWII ended, how we all sang as we walked those streets! Were you there too?
I think your mother sang in the chorus that my mother directed too.
I even remember that you--and others liked to hike in my Dad's pastures, and played in the canyons.
Haigler was a great place for growing up--we knew everyone, and they knew us.
My sister Dorothy lives across the Phoenix area from us (we are in Mesa), and we meet every month for lunch. Our younger sister lives in Oregon and comes to Dorothy's every year.
Good to hear about an old Haiglerite!
Marilyn (Scrivner) Holzwarth
Marilyn, I am surprised you remember that my mother sang in the chorus directed by your mother. I can't recall where your land was. I was on everybodies land withing walking distance of Haigler. On VJ day I was driving a truck loaded with cattle to Denver for Haigler Ranch. L.E. Crews was with me. They were his cattle. We left early in the morning before we knew that Japan had surrendered. It was a trying trip because so much was closed. I was all of 15, but in those days everybody did what they had to and could do.
DeleteI recently bought potatoes in Midland, TX in a sack marked Ringneck Pheasant Farms, Haigler, NE. I wonder where it is located. I'd guess west of town in the Republican River Valley where they used to grow sugar beets. Recall that I. D. Long and wife, old time settlers of that country lived dirctly across the Highway 34 from our house. His wife was deaf and had white hair. Their son, Ted, lived around Haigler somewhere.
Hello Marilyn, I would appreciate it if you emailed me adamsutt2@aol!
DeleteI have been doing genealogy for a while now and I have been trying to contact you for some information on Hannah Anna Stahlecker and Mary Anna Wall. I gave up looking for you about a month ago, and I was on this blog looking for information of George Paeske and out of the corner of my eye, I see your name! What a surprise! If you could email me I would VERY much appreciate it, as I am looking for information for my genealogical pursuits that I have had much trouble in finding. For all of the information I already have, it all came from Cheyenne County Cemetery indexes and MyTrees account, Holzwar1, which I am assuming is you. If you could just email me at adamsutt2@aol.com, it would mean very much to me, Thank you!
