TAKING WHAT YOU GET –A Collection of Short Stories—Volume II is the title of the just published book by
local Haigler author. S. L. Carlock. As
in Volume I, WHERE WE BELONG, published in 2011 by Morris Publishing Company;
this collection of 52 fascinating short stories is based on happenings in
everyday life. He began writing short
stories in 1996 when he and his wife LaNeta retired and moved back to Haigler,
after 40 years of career lives. Now in
their 70’s, they continue to give back to the community that helped to educate
and give them a good start along life’s road.
Stan believes each of our lives is filled with compelling
stories waiting to be captured on paper.
People, family, pets, places, times, events, history, and invisible
threads all have a story to tell. Each reader of his book will be able to
relate to many of the stories. Quoting
from one of his writings, “It is no great revelation that each of us must ‘take
what we get’ when we arrive in this world.
Some are born to wealth and position, others to poverty and ignorance,
and all that falls in between. The
hardest part is you have no say in the matter yourself. You must ‘take what you get’ and make the
best of it.”
Stan grew up as a farm boy in southwest Nebraska, graduated
from Haigler High School in 1958, spent a 4-year enlistment in the United
States Air Force, earned a B.S. in Civil Enginering, and practiced for 28 years
before retiring in 1994. He is now a
Professional Engineer Emeritus in the state of Nebraska.
