LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES 2 ND BOOK OF SHORT STORIES

TAKING WHAT YOU GET –A Collection of Short Stories—Volume II   is the title of the just published book by local Haigler author. S. L. Carlock.  As in Volume I, WHERE WE BELONG, published in 2011 by Morris Publishing Company; this collection of 52 fascinating short stories is based on happenings in everyday life.  He began writing short stories in 1996 when he and his wife LaNeta retired and moved back to Haigler, after 40 years of career lives.  Now in their 70’s, they continue to give back to the community that helped to educate and give them a good start along life’s road.
Stan believes each of our lives is filled with compelling stories waiting to be captured on paper.  People, family, pets, places, times, events, history, and invisible threads all have a story to tell. Each reader of his book will be able to relate to many of the stories.  Quoting from one of his writings, “It is no great revelation that each of us must ‘take what we get’ when we arrive in this world.  Some are born to wealth and position, others to poverty and ignorance, and all that falls in between.  The hardest part is you have no say in the matter yourself.  You must ‘take what you get’ and make the best of it.”
Stan grew up as a farm boy in southwest Nebraska, graduated from Haigler High School in 1958, spent a 4-year enlistment in the United States Air Force, earned a B.S. in Civil Enginering, and practiced for 28 years before retiring in 1994.  He is now a Professional Engineer Emeritus in the state of Nebraska.

For more information, contact Stan Carlock, PO Box 144, Haigler, NE 69030-0144; 308-297-3226 or email carlock@bwtelcom.net.  Cost of the book is $20, and sales proceeds will be donated to the Haigler Community Foundation.

The Haigler High School Class of 1956 - Sixtieth Class Reunion

On Saturday, May 28, 2016, the classes of 1956 and 1955 are invited to attend visiting and dinner at the Golden Inn. The doors will open at 4PM and dinner at 5PM. There will be a charge for the lite dinner and dessert from the Haigler Country Café so we are requiring an advance reservation. Please have reservations in to Kaye Kamla, 308-297-3496 for class of 1955 and/or to Freddie Schroeder, (aka Alfreda Stute) 303-437-4255 before May 23, 2016. Arrangements made by Larry Collins.
Other weekend activities are optional. Come to as many as you can that suits your interest and time schedule. We look forward to seeing you at as many as possible.
Haigler Community Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. I am going to suggest that the class of 55 and 56 may want to go up there about 2 to 4 so many of us could be there at same time to see each other. This is the old gym and newer grade school. There will be rooms to tour, some with local craftspeople and business people selling their wares. Also there is a Sunshine Thrift Shop with clothes, etc. Then there will also be refreshments available.
Before that, you may want to gather at Jake's Place. for lunch around noon-ish. Recent FaceBook postings raved about the fried gizzards, potato salad, cold beer and others complimented the French fries, fried livers, chicken sandwiches, and hamburgers. I called Craig Kamla and he will have all these available.
At 4 p.m. the class of 1955 will gather at the Golden Inn for snacks and visiting followed by dinner around 5 p.m. Visiting time following until ........
At 8:30 p.m. there is a dance at the Haigler Community Center. They always have a good band.
Sunday morning is 8:00 a.m. church at the Zion Lutheran Church in Haigler.
At 9:00 a.m., church is at the Methodist Church.
Sunday at noon, will be the Potluck Dinner at the American Legion in Haigler.
Monday morning will be services at the Haigler Cemetery at 10 a.m. Following these services, yummy sweet rolls and coffee are served by the American Legion at the Haigler Legion Hall.
We do hope you plan to join in this year's Memorial Weekend, see the changes in our home town and visit with your many friends.
If you are not able to come, we would like you to send us and update on yourself, family, etc. and some pictures would be nice.
