First, let me say thank you to Lloyd Zuege (deceased) for giving me the opportunity to get hired at the Martin Company in the foothills of Littleton, Colorado in 1959. Lloyd worked in Human Resources at the plant where the Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles were being assembled and tested.
The Berlin Crises was looming between East and West Berlin and the Dundy County Draft Board was knocking at the door at the same time. Germany was in chaos with the big communist wall being built by the Russians.
I went ahead and joined the Army, my orders were cut before I even got to boot camp. (to NORAD).
Prior to joining the military, I ran around with the Lowry Air Force Base Judo Gang (Another story). On my last evening of civilian freedom, it was decided to celebrate with a little bit of nightlife at some tavern in southeast Denver by Cherry Creek Dam. We went to a tavern and Low-and-Behold, a tavern brawl broke out with about 40 participants -- I was in the center of this occupation. HEH!!!
I heard police sirens in the distance responding our way -- out the back door and into the darkness, not to be seen by flashlights, spotlights or to be found by police authorities.
The next day was induction to the swearing in ceremonies, to raise your right hand to the oath of upholding the constitution of the United States and to not support any attempted overthrow of the U.S. Government. The man officiating the ceremonies looked at me, I looked at him, I had a black eye and a fat lip with my right hand in ceremonial position. His eyes rolled in his head, rolled back into his head, looking at me again, and proceeding with me being an official inductee of the U.S. Military.
Ha ha!! What do you think his thoughts were??? I'll never know to this day, but I know, by golly, I'm a Nebraskan!!
