Remember the Mendenhall Family

I left Haigler with my family and moved to Yuma, CO in 1946.  My father was Vern Mendenhall, manager of the Farmers Co-op.  I left Yuma in 1947 for college.  Since that time I've been many places.  I became an officer in the US Navy and a geologist in the oil business. At 83 I am the last of my family living.  We owned the Buffalo Creek Fish Hatchery.  Moved from it into town in 1938.  Times were tough.  The hiring of my father as manager of the "Elevator" saved our bacon.  Mayme and Vern are buried at Lincoln, NE., my brother Maurice at Denver and my sister Phyllis at Woodward, OK.  My wife, Ruth, and I are living at home in Midland, TX.  We had two children.  Our daughter had two daughters and our son had a daughter and a son.  All are living.

There may be some around Haigler who remember the family if not specifically me.  Gerald (Jerry) Mendenhall

Haigler School has been Purchased

The former Haigler Elementary School building and gymnasium have been sold to a local group in the Haigler, Dundy County community. The Dundy County Stratton Public Schools Board of Education voted Monday evening, November 11, 2013, to accept the group's offer and proposal to preserve and re-purpose the buildings for community betterment and economic development in Dundy County and southwest Nebraska. The buildings had been for sale since the elementary school closed its doors in June of this year.

New owners will be the Haigler Community Foundation. Fund drives for the purchase dollars and first year's operating expenses have already begun. LaNeta Carlock, representing the local group, said "donor pledges from individuals and organizations to date total $10,000; and we are confident the needed funds will be raised." All donations are tax deductible.

Ideas for optimum usage of the facilities will always be welcomed by the organizing group. Initially, the facilities will be available for business office rental; meeting rooms, event rentals, kitchen usage, library development, art gallery, exhibit space for continuing museum collections to preserve the history of Dundy County, craft fairs, flea markets, auctions, community thrift store, youth activities, adult education classes, recreation, community and economic development opportunities. It is hoped the doors will be open again before spring arrives. Watch for further announcements.

Lois (Logan) Horn

I received the following email from Lois (Logan) Horn who is the daughter of Lee Logan who worked at the State Bank of Haigler up until 1929 when the stock market crashed.

DEAR SHERRI,

I JUST CHECKED THE HAIGLER BLOG AND READ OF THE TUMBLEWEED FESTIVAL.  HOW APPROPRIATE.  AN IMAGE OF MY CHILDHOOD IN LONG PINE, NEBRASKA (AFTER HAIGLER AND AN OHIO FARM) IS OF TUMBLEWEEDS BLOWING DOWN MAIN STREET.

I AM 90 PLUS NOW AND IN GOOD HEALTH, STILL ACTIVE IN BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT.  MY HUSBAND OF 71 YEARS PASSED AWAY AT AGE 98 THIS YEAR.

IT IS FUN TO SEE A FEW FAMILY NAMES IN THE BLOG;  PALMER, ZUEGE, ROACH, ETC.  AMAZING THAT I REMEMBER THEM SINCE WE LEFT HAIGLER IN 1929 WHEN MY DAD'S BANK WENT BROKE BECAUSE IT WAS TIED IN WITH THE NEBRASKA BANKING SYSTEM .  ALL THE VILLAGE BANKS WENT DOWN IN ABOUT ONE FELL SWOOP.

I REMEMBER MY MOTHER TELLING ABOUT "BILL ZUEGE" COMING TO "GIVE HER A GOODBYE" BEFORE HE LEFT FOR, I THINK IT WAS DETROIT, "TO GET A JESUS FOR THE CHURCH."  I REMEMBER THAT WE KIDS PLAYED WITH THE PALMER KIDS.  WAS THERE A PALMER GIRL NAMED "BUNCH"?  I REMEMBER THE GIRL NAMED "BUNCH" AS A  PRETTY YOUNG GIRL.

THANKS FOR KEEPING THE MEMORIES ALIVE.

LOIS LEE LOGAN HORN,  SEATTLE, WA.
